THE YMCA. CLUB NEW SEASON OPENED Judging by the cnlhut-ia.ni displayed by members of the Y.M.UA. Harrier Club at the opening run of the J93G season on Saturday afternoon, the new season should be a successful one for the |clirb. This is the MArond yeai of the j club’s activities and indications are that it will show a big adxoacc on last year. Member's and officials of the Wanga nui and Murton Hairier Clubs were pre sent for the opening run and a field |of more than 40 runners were disI patched from the Y.M.C.A. building by Mrs N. Wallace, wife of the president of bhc club afl er the season had been declared open by the Mayor of Wanganui, Mr W. J. Rogers. Prior to the comnrenccmont of the run a welcome waa extended to the Mayor and the visiting harriers by Lhe president, Mr N, Wallace. • In declaring the season opened, Mt Rogers expressed his plcasuic at the .attendance uf the Marton runners and 'hoped that the visit would be returned I during the season. He had no doubt t b t an excellent season v.as ahead uf I the three clubs. I Cheers were then given for 'Mr Rogers and the teams lined up fur the start. The Wanganui harriers cheered the visiturs and the field was dispatched by Mrs Wallace. The run was over a three-mile course, the greater portion of which consisted of swampy land and roads, and was taken easily by cumpetitoiri, must of whom have not yet received the full benefit of their training. The race was held under the whistle of the captain of the Y.M.C.A. Club and a run in was held over the finnl ouartcr-milc. The winner was J. Couch man, a new member of the club, and was followed by R. O’Donnell (WangaJiui), C. Cox (Wanganui), G. Bourne

(Y.M.C.A.), <’. Harper (Y.M.C.A.), and D. Hodge (Y.M.C.A.) The run in for the A park wr.s won by A. Bourgeois (Wanganui), with K. Johnston (Wanganui) second, and R. Dix (Wanganui) third. At the conclusion of the race the competitors were entertained at afternoon tea at the Y.M.C.A. by the ladies’ committee. The president of the YM.C.A. Harrier Club, Mr N. Wallace, extended a welcome to the Mayor, Air W. J. Rogers, and the visiting members and officials of the Wanganui and Marlon Harrier Clubs. Mr \V. J. Rogers said he wa’ delighted to extend a since)e and warm welcome to the visiting barriers. Ho hoped that the present season would be a happy and successful one for the Y.M.C.A. Hairier Club. Mr D. McPherson extended the best wishes of the Al art on llarr.tr Club and apologised for the absence uf the president, Air Dashwood. Air K. Johnston, president of the Wanganui Harrier Club, thanked the officials and members of the Y.M.C.A. Club for the invitat'on to participate in the opening run of t.ho season. The Wanganui Club was wilding to do anything to assist the Y.M.C A. and Mar ton Clubs in their activities. The Y.M.C.A. Club had made great progress and he would be pleased to see its members come out on top this reason. Messrs C. R. White and A. Bourgeois, past presidents of the Wanganiui Club, added their best wishes to the club. Mr A. C. Seivewright extended his best wishes to the club as a vice-presi-dent of the Wanganui Harrier Club and a member of the board of directors of the Y.M.C.A. The harrier chib had the whole-hearted backing of the directors, who realised that the club was a decided asset. The Y.M.C.A. was a great asset to Wanganui and the director« were out to put it on the map as it was some years ago. He wished the club every success during the new sea son. ATr F. Mairs, a member of the hoard of directors, expressed the thanks of the el’ub and visitors for the afternoon tea provided by the ladies’ auxiliary. Those ladies, he said, did a wonderful work for the Y.M.C.A. and no task was too big for them to undertake in its interests. In replying the president, Mns Hair, said that the work was a labour of love.
