BEAU STAR S STEEPLES SLIPPERY AND ONE WHETU HUNTING QUEENS HACK CUP BGMONT MEETING CONCLUDES (Special Reporter.) If further projf than that provided by the large attendance at the Hawera racecourse on Saturday were required regarding the popularity of ihe Egmont Racing Club’s winter meeting it was furnished in the totalisator turnover. For the seven events on Saturday ’* programme the totalisator handled £14,064 10s, as compared with the £14,547 10s put through for eight events on the second day of the 1935 meeting, the King’s jubilee holiday fixture. The aggregate for the meeting was thus £26,191, compared with £23,612 10s last year, the increase being £1578 10s. The turnover for last week’s meeting was nearly £ll,OOO above the amount handled nt the 1934 fixture, furnishing striking evidence of the revival of interest in racing. The weather, fine early in the day, became overcast soon after racing commenced and there were several showers, though they were not heavy. The track was still heavy but in good order. The meeting was again well conducted, but the programme again got behind schedule, due mainly to the inability of the totalisator stall fu handle the volume of betting and also to the delays apparently inseparable from a Taranaki race meeting. Tho visitor* for the meeting ineluded the Hon. P. C. Webb, Minister of Mines, who presented the Champion Hack Cup trophy to Mr. T. A. Duncan, owner of the winner. Hunting Queen, who is trained at Marton by L. G. Morris. The rider of the winner, 8. Wilson, was the most successful jockey at the meeting, for he was also on Prostration (Mcßae Cup) and Boomerang (winner of the concluding event eacn day). Beau Star sprang a surprise when he won the Adamson Steeplechase for his Eltham owner, for he returned double figures in a field of six. Petrarch was ►econd but Valpeen. favourite, did not run as well a= on the opening day and finished fourth. Contact repeated his first day’s feat by winning the hurdle race, though this time his finishing effort was reserved till the last half-milo. and he won by the narrowest margin from a likely sort in Silk Sox. Mustang won the hack sprint and One Whetu surprised by defeating ihe sprinters in the Mokoia Handicap. Slippery was also at a good price when he shared the leading position with St. Clara in the Davidson Handicap ami came away at the finish to beat the well-backed pair, Friesland and Prostration. Contact Scores Again •ontact was the favourite ihe win machine for the Manawapou Hurdles, but Debut was prefei e 1 an the place pool, only to finish >ut ci -a place, with Contact winning again, though only narrowly from Silk >ux. Debut went to the front early but was joined passing the stands by Silk Sox, the pair being followed out of the straight by Wahine Nui, Saltspray and Contact. Silk Sox had charge at the six furlongs from Debut. Wahine Nui. Saltspray and Contact, but the, last named moved up fast along the back and joined Silk Sox in rhe lead cressing the top and the pair raced for the last hurdle together, ahead of Saltspray arj Debut. Over the final stages the leaders had a great tussle, ano Contact got home in the last stride by a head from Silk Sox. with Saltspray two and a half lengths back. IDebut was fourth and Glen\ane. Arctic Star and Wahine Nui followed in that order. Mustang's Hack Sprint Trouvaille and Mustang shared favouritism in the Shorts Hack Handicap, which event was won by Mustang in another good finish from De Trop. Kentucky Song, Erebus ar.u Trouvaille moved out smartly, but Erebus soon ran to the front and piloted Sir Tommy. Kentucky Song. De Trop, Night Spi, Trouvaille and Rustem along rhe back, with Joviality moving up from last very fast. By the time they had reached the half-mile Joviality had joined Erebus in the lead, and he turned for home two lengths ahead cf Erebus, Sir Tommy. De Trop. Mustang and Rustem. The field bunched over t.ne final stages and then Mustang and De Trop sorted themselves out. inc 'ormer getting the verdict by a head. Trouvaille was a length awav. third, and. then came Nga*i.-ahiri, .lovialitv. X airoy, Script, Sir Tommy and Night* Reau Star Surprises - peen was just a Jittie better hacked tnan Petrarch in the Adamson Steeplechase, but Beau Star sprang a double-figcra surprise. Beau Star was seu-a taken in c ihe l*ad, with IDon Erma, Valpeen. Indolent and Petrarch following in that order, and over the stands .. -iible Beau Star was joined by Indefinite and Don Erma, with Valpeen and Petrarch following at intervals. Dou Erma moved up to join Beau Star at the six furlongs, but Petrarch then ran past them, only to be joined by Beau Star half a mile fiom home. Indefinite blundered five furlongs from home. Tne pair jumped the last three fences together, but on the flat Beau Star came away to win by two lengths. Ten lengths away was Dc-n Erma, wit? Valpeen twenty Jeng.hs back a..d Coper was a furlong away. Favourite Wins Trophy Race Hunting Queen was a good favourite for the Champion Hack Cup. with Leo Colossus next in request, and the public proved correct, for the pair finished first and second. They got away to a splendid start, and Orac, Cappy and Meritor showed ihe way out of the straight to Sporting Song. Dancing Lady, Hunting Queen, Leo Colossus and Corowa. At the six furlongs Sport Song was in behind Orac and Cappy, with Dancing Lady. Hunting Queen and Lee- Colossus following, but Hunting Queen had moved up fast along the back and followed Orac into the straight, with Leo Colossus, Corowa and IDancing Lady nearest of the others. Once straightened up for the run to the judge, Hunting Queen asserted her claim and cswe away to win by two lengths. Leo Colossus hanging on 10 net second place a head in front of

Orac. Le Grand was fourth and Corowa next, with a gap back to Reipar and Dancing Lady. Sprint by One Whetu > Gold Mission was a good favourite for the Mokoia Handicap, but was beaten into second place by One Whetu, who returned a dividend just short of double figures. Windsoreen was left at the post and did not take any part in the race. ■ Limulus moved out first from Re- } fresher. Boughal, Gold Mission and ; One Whetu, but Boughal got through c on the inside after going two furlongs and led Limulus, Refresher and Gold r Mission past the half-mile. One Whetu ran up to the leaders quickly, but * Limulus led him into the straight, with Boughal. Go-id Mission and Refresher following. One Whetu hit the front when they straightened up and ’ held off Gold Mission’s challenge to win by a neck. Limulus was three ’ lengths back, ahead of Refresher, with Boughal last. Slippery ’ s Handicap ) I Prostration Fas sorted out as a gO)d ’ thing for the Davidson Handicap, oT‘ Slippery won from Friesland and the , favourite. ’ Going out of the straight Slippeiy. I and St. Clara were disputing the lead, . followed by Davistock, Friesl in I.' I Grateful. Alchemic, Prostration anc I Tahurangi. Running past th *.x furi longs, St. Clara had charge from Slipj pery, Alchemic, Friesland, Grateful, . Davistock and Prostration. St. Clara » and Slippery led across the top from > Lapel. Friesland. Grateful, Alchemic and Prostration, and thus they turned - into the straight. At the disanee Slippery was doing it best and he held on i to win by half a length from Fries- . land, with Prostration a lengtji away, . third. Grateful was fourth and Tahurangi, Alchemic and Lapel followed in , that order. Boomerang Again r Boomerang and Flammarion were ’ best backed in ihe concluding event, the. Borough Hack Handicap, and the . pair finished as backed, with the out- . sider of the field, Golden Rill, in third . place. Flammarion and Trouvaille were first out from Golden Rill, Boomerang. : Red Fox and Hamarin, and running 5 down the back the leading pair were . three lengths ahead of Boomerang. . The favourite closed on the leaders crossing the top and joined Flami marion at the straight entrance, where Trouvaille was also there and Red , Fox and Gold Ruler were next. Boom- , erang asserted his claim once they . straightened up and came on to win , by a length from Flammarion, with Gold Ruler, five lengths back, beating [ Trouvaille for third place. There wa> , a gap back to Hamarin and Red Fox. (Details of results are:— MANAWAPOU HURDLES i Of £120; 1* miles. | . I 3—CONTACT (Mr. K. cJ ie- , i ch g. syrs.. by Cockpit—Tin - trix, 10.8. C.
