MONTHLY MEETING HELD GENERAL BUSINESS AND REPORT The Wanganui County Council met yesterday, Mr. Duncan Maskintosh presiding. Also present were Crs. D. McGregor, J. J. Lissette, J. Todd, A. Rice. T. Mitchell, A. Collins, J. J. Naumann and W. Craig. During a discussion on road classification, the county engineer (Mr. R. R. Dawson) said that at the present time all the bridges in the county wore capable of carrying the 6J-ton limit. Engineer’s Report. The engineer (Mr. R. R. Dawson) reported as follows: Mangawhcro Riding.—Metal repairs arc being carried out on the lower end of the No. 48 Highway for which gravel is being obtained from, the council’s pit on the Makirikiri Road. Repairs aro also being made in the vicinity of Kakatahi lor whioh three lorries are employed obtaining grit from Phillips’ pit. Similar repairs will also be made at an early date between the 26-miie peg and Raupiu bridge for which grit will be obtained from Montgomerie ’h pit. "Work in connection with the replacement of the temporary bridge at Kukuta will be commenced immediately. The Wanganui River Road is epen for traffic to Atene and flood damage repairs are being continued. Light metal repairs will be effected on the lowe. end as early as possible. The Parihauhau and Te Komai Roads are open for traffic and good progress is being made with general repair work. Metal repairs have been effected on the top end of the Makirikiri Valley Road. Mangamahu Riding.—Metal repairs are being carried out on the No. 50 Highway for whioh grit is being obtained from Hunter’s pit at Ngatuii and from various pits above Mangamahu. Urgent surface repairs arc necessary between Aranui and Mount View. However, this job can tbly be done whilst weather conditions are favourable and no opportunity will be lost for giving effect tu this work when circumstances permit. Flood damage repairs are progressing favourably on this highway under adverse weather conditions which not only hampes the work but creates wore by way of further slips. The majority of slips have been cleared on the Upper Wangachu Valley Road and metal repairs are being made for which grit is being obtained from Fields Track junction and Greaves pit. Surface repairs will also be made on Fields Track. Purua Riding—Light gravel repairs have been made on the No. 50 Highway and further repairs are now being carried out. Gravel surface repairs are also required on the Warrengate and Matarawa Valley Roads and this work will be commenced next week. The Railway Department are installing a level crossing near Fordell in terms as agreed by t/he council. This work will be put in hand at an early date and it will therefore be necessary to immediately remove the banks and trees which obscure the view. Kaitoke Riding.—The No. 1 Highway is in good condition with the exception of minor surface repairs which are necessary and will be given effect to immediately. The road drains at Kaitoke have been cleared and similar repairs will be made to the Putiki drains at an early date. Metal surface repairs are necessary on the Pauri Road and this work will be done as early as possible. Kaukatea Riding.—Light metal repairs have been made on the No. 3 Line, Gordon Park and Long Acre Roads. Further repairs are necessary particularly at the top end of the No. 3 Line and this wok will be put in hand as soon as possible. Morikau Riding.—Ordinary maintenance work is being carried out on the Wanganui River Road to prevent as far as possible, any further damage until provision is made for repairing the major jobs. Genera! attention is being

given to the side roads which being unmetalled can only be in an indifferent state at this season of the year. General.—Painting and minor repairs have been completed on six of the council’s cottages, viz., Aberfeldie, Okoia. Kaitoke, Fordell, Ngaturi and Creek Road.
