MARTON

MARTON MUNICIPAL BAND A special meeting of the Marton Municipal Brass Band was held in the band room on Thursday evening. The meeting was called to enlist any new players, especially boys, and as a result seven recruits attended. They were very keen members and all were supplied with instruments, and their first lesson is to take place next week under the supervision of the bandmaster, Mr D. Williams. Needless to say all the boys wanted to play the cornet, but after a try out on the various instruments, the intending players were provided with instruments best fitted for them. It is intended at a later date to invite the Wanganui Garrison or the Queen Alexandra’s to give an open-air performance in the Marton Park, some Sunday afternoon, followed by a concert in the evening in the Civic Theatre. HARRIERS To-day the Marton harriers journey to Wanganui to participate in the official opening of the Y.M.C. Club. Two car loads will be making the trip and the run commences at 2.3(1 p.m. from the Y.M.C.A. buildings. The local harriers will be the guests of the club at a dance in the evening. For the benefit of those who are not travelling to Wanganui, a whistle run will bo held, leaving the Anglican Church at 2.30 p.m. MARTON JUNCTION WOMEN’S INSTITUTE About ninety members were present at the monthly meeting of the Marton Junction W.I. on Wednesday. Mrs Humphrey presided and extended a welcome to several visitors present and also to three new membeis. During the month two members had attended the first birthday of the Po-rewa W.I. Mrs Follett was congratulated on having her homespun and dyed wools sent to Washington to be exhibited at the conference to be held there next month, these wools having earned special mention whenever they have been exhibited at W.I. displays. Mrs WiiAhnowsky, of Turn kina, ably demonstrated the art of puff pastry making, every member being keenly interested, A very comprehensive report of the annual council meeting which was held in Palmerston North last month was read by Mrs Gibson. Mis-s Pat True entertained with two pianoforte solos, after which Mrs Hunt spoke of the early days of the institute, with brief reference to the founder of the movement and her coworkers, her short talk proving very interesting. Mesdames Wischnowsky and Hunt kindly judged the competition, which was for six varieties of biscuits, the winners being Airs Watts 1, Mrs Hart 2, and Mrs J. Kendrick 3. The hostesses for the next meeting, which is the birthday and is to be held in the Civic Theatre, are Mesdames Young (chief). R. Wilson, Wells, AV. Thompson, Andrews, Abel, and Misses Truman and Wadman. These for the Hoot are Mesdames Larry, Thorburn, and Thomas. THE CIVIC THEATRE "CURLY TOP" A little 'eupid who picks her spots to shoot her darts best describes Shirley Temple’s portrayal in "Curly Top," the new Fox Film comedy-drama with music, which comes to-night to the Civic. Theatre. Shirley has the role of a little orphan who wins her way into the heart of John Boles, a wealthy trustee of the orphanage. At the large summer mansion which Boles owns, Shirley enacts the role of cupid to perfection. Rochelle Hudson, believing Boles is not interested in her, decides to marry someone else, but Shirley, who knows differently, employs her childish charms to bring the two together. Playing the role of cupid, however, docs not in the least prevent Shirley from singing and dancing. "Curly lop presents Shirley with intricate dance routines and two new songs, "Animal Crackers in Aly Soup’’ and "When I Grow Up." John Bole-s and Rochelle Hudson also do their share of singing in "Curly Top."
