BOXER OF PROMISE

| NEW HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION I I | The performance of J. E. A.-pell in winning the heavyweight boxing championship at the inter-university tournament in Wellington at Easter was u‘ie ul the »no*t remarkable in recent years. Aspell had to concede 341 b to the defending champion. A. H. Armour, of Victoria College, and when he gain the decision in quite the most exciting bout of the evening Canterbury College secured the boxing shield for the first time since .1926. An old boy of St. Kevin’s College, Oamaru, Aspell is taking an accountancy course at Canterbury yollcge. He is a fine natural boxer, and he has made such remarkable progress in the last year that he is expected to make a strong bid for honours at the provincial championships. Followers of boxing will recall his fine effort in the final of the light-heavy class at the Canterbury championships last year, when, in the opinion of many competent critics, he was unlucky to lose the decision to R. J. Rains, of Rakaia, winner of two decisions over A. J. Bourne, New Zealand heavyweight champion in ]934. As he is still young he mav be expected to earn high honours in the future.
