WEATHER FORECAST

Meteorological Office. Wellington, Friday, May 8, 4 p.m. General Situation. —A rather intense anti-cyclone extends across the north Tasman Seg. on to New Zealand, but pressure has been relatively low to-day off East Cape. A fresh depression of the westerly type covers the south-west Tasman Sea. Forecast. —Winds: Moderate to strong southerly to south-easterly north of Westport and Kaikoura, but decreasing; elsewhere light to moderate and variable but with northerly ruling and northerlies extending- to beyond Cook Strait by to-morrow and gradually freshening. Seas i N*.Z. waters): Rough north of Farewell Spit and Cape Campbell, elsewhere moderate but rising' later in the far south. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate south-east winds in the northern portion with moderate seas; Freshening north-west winds and rising seas in the southern portion. Weather: For the most part fine, but a few scattered and mainly coastal showers at first between Cook Strait and East Cape. Becoming unsettled again shortly, however, on the "West Const and far southern districts of the South Island, with rain developing there. Temperatures cold with inland frosts to-night but becoming milder generally to-morrow.
