STOCK MARKETS

WEEKLY REVIEW The Farmers’ Co-operative Organisation Society of New Zealand Limited in their weekly review of the stock market state that it is many years since such a free enquiry has been enjoyed for most classes of stock, with so few quotations available .to satisfy same. The enquiry for store sheep has been particularly free, any quotations at all being very readily absorbed. Wintry conditions as far as Taranaki is concerned have started with a vengeance, most dairy herds now being on to a once a day milking, with the end of the season production likely to be cut short sooner than expected. Fat Stock. Fat stock quotations on the Smithfield market continue to remain very firm with a distinct shortage of local supplies, as far as butchers’ requirements for winter trade indicated, with new high levels being reached for fat sheep. Values for fat ewes in truck lots range from 20s to 22s for extra prime sheep, with fat wethers from 27s 6d to 28s 6d, sales including a line of 80 at 27s 6d. The large yarding of “ meaty ” cows ex dairy now coming forward has limited the sales of the 11 better bred” cattle quite considerably, the works, however, continuing to absorb fairly large numbers. Values for best prime fat cows and heifers range from £7 to £7 10s; lighter sorts £6 5s to £6 15s. Store Stock. As reported, a particularly free enquiry has beeu enjoyed for all classes of store sheep, ewes mated to either S.D. or Romney rams being keenly enquired after, sales including 520 in.a. ewes at 28s; 200 s.m. ewes at 20s and odd small lots of s.m. ewes from 20s to 245. Both ewe and wether hogget quotations are readily absorbed, sales of the former including 300 at 27s 6d and 100 at 24s 6d, with sales of the latter including 150 good sheep 20s, 100 at 20s, and odd sales from 16s 6d to 18s 6d. Only young cattle and very forward older cattle find favour as far as the enquiry for store cattle is concerned, sales including 30 medium P.A. steers at £3 ss, 30 m.s. P.A. and Hereford weaner calves at £3 10s, with quotations of really top weaner steers to as high as £5 and weaner heifers to £4. Medium business has been transacted during the week in dairy stock, delivery of between some 500 and GOO head" of dairy heifers having been given, mostly going to outside districts, with still further large numbers yet to go forward. Sales during the week include a truck of choice 2yr. heifers at £B, 20 choice 3yr. heifers at £7 10s, 24 choice 2yr. heifers at £7. Dairy herds have found favour since our last report, sales including 40 good young cows at £9 ss, 30 at £9 and 20 at £9 10s, only young early calving cows being enquired after. The market for Jersey weaner heifers has been somewhat lifeless, quotations, however, showing no easing, best cattle ranging from £3 10s to £4, more medium sorts from £2 10s to £3. Exceptionally large yardings of sfore cows have come forward everywhere, keen sales resulting. Yard. Sales. Waverley Sale, Friday, May I.
