Hester McKnight.—Did you take your bulbs with you or do you have to start all over again? “Cherry Blossom.” —It is not necessary to have a glass top to your fernery. If you have glass you could make a glass case to grow the more delicate ferns. Do not have too much cover on top. Allow a certain amount of light and sun to enter from the top. The sides should be well protected to stop the cold winds. The top just sufficiently covered to break the frost. Do not put your cactus in the bush house. They require all the sun possible. This is where you could use your glass. They like a gritty soil. Only water two or three times a year. Jean and Norma. —Your ages, please, when next writing. Hope to see you at the classes. TRANSPLANTING SHRUBS The season for transplanting shrubs and trees is at hand and many gardeners will be wishing to move shrubs from one part of the garden to another. So long as the shrub is not too large, a useful method of transplanting a shrub from one place to another is by raising the shrub, or rather the ball of soil on to the spade, and using the spade as a sledge. Having prepared the place for planting, simply slide the ball of soil off the spade into positi >n and cover with soil. With larger specimens it is necessary to wrap sack round the ball to prevent the soil falling away, and then to place a board or boards under to lift it. With evergreens it is almost essential to lift with a ball of soil but with deciduous kinds most do all right if the soil is shaken , off the roots, so long, as care is taken 1 not to damage the roots.
