REGENT THEATRE

"ROSE OP THE RANCHO” Rose ol the Rancho,” which, con* menced at the Regent Theatre at a late shoppers’ session last night, was specially selected by the J. U. William son Picture Corporation to open then palatial new Auckland theatre, Tne i.nibassy, and drew phenomenal crowds to every session. The film marks the screen debut of Gladys ISwarihout, a star of the Metropolitan Opera at New Tc-rk, whose beauty of face is matched by the depth and richness of her voice. “Rose of the Rancho” falls at first sight into the category of outdoor musical romance, but the special musical score (including no fewer than 11 now songs and four Spanish dances), together with the voice and personality of Gladys Swarthout and that of her co-star, John Bolcs ; raises the film to the level of a screen operetta. Willie Howard and Herb. Williams, two well-known stage comedians, are in the supporting cast with Charles Bickford and H. B. Warner. The associate programme includes another of the sensational “March of Time” series, giving a new angle on the situation between Japan and China in Manchuria, a 2000 ft. colour classic entitled “Morocco Nights” and another enjoyable “Popeye the Sailor Man” cartoon.
