AMERICAN PRESIDENCY
ME LANDON'S CAMPAIGN <' AI. n-’( > R XIA ’ S Ar.IT IT UD E NEW YORK, May 6. Governor A. Landon’s campaign for the Republican Presidential nomination suffered its first reversal to-dav when incomplete returns from California primaries indicated that voters preferred an uninstructcd delegation rather than one pledged to the Kansas Governor. The contest was significant as Mr Herbert Hoover, who is reputed to be opposed to Mr Landon, is likely to have considerable influence with the delegation, both in the voting for a nominee and drafting ‘campaign. On the Democratic side the delegation pledged to Preside Tit Roosevelt took a commanding lead over the Upton Sinclair slate and one advanced by Townsend Plan supporters. Tn South Dakota Mr Landon held a substantial lead over Senator Borah in early voting. President Roosevelt is unopposed in that State. This is the first clear-cut contest between Mr Landon and Senator Borah in a western State and indicates that Senator Borah is not as strong in this section as he was supposed to bo.
