WEARING OUT ROADS
PAST HEAVY TRAFFIC A rPREHENSION EXPRESSED [ Per Press Association 1 CHRISTCHURCH. May fi. Apprehension lest the nu.tor regulations should be altered to allow heavy traffic vehicles to travel at greater maximum speeds than they are now allowed was expressed at a conference on heavy traffic attended by representatives of ’oca] bodies. Points made by speakers were that greater speeds would cause the road to wear out more quickly and would add considerably to the dangers of the travelling public. The conference passed the following resolution: “That in the evpnt of the Transiport Department deciding to make changes in the direction of allowing increased speeds for heavy traffic full opportun ties should be given to the interested 'ocal bodies to make representations to the Department before the decisions are made.’* The discussion arose out .of mention of the Hon. R. Semple’s recent statement that the regulations might be revised to permit of greater speeds as the present regulations were framed for vehicles with solid tyres. Some delegates suggested that the meeting should express an opinion about car speeds, suggesting a legal limit, tut as the conference was concerned only with heavy traffic vehicle ro=<»lutinn was •passed.
