RACING IN RAIN

EGMONT MEETING OPENS RASOULI'S STEEPLECHASE CONTACT WINS HURDLES (Special Reporter; Kain fell at Hawera yesterday morning and made conditions for the opening day of tjie Egmont Racing Club’s winter meeting rather miserable, but there was a large crowd of visitors and local patrons. Several showers during the afternoon did not appear to damp the enthusiasm of patrons for the totalizator turnover showed an increase of over .30 per cent, on last year’s opening day, a Saturday. when £0065 was handled, yesterday total being £12,126 10s. Under the circumstances this was excellent, for lucre was at lease one large dividend to set bettors back. The track, after a good deal of ram, was very heavy, and the tinges for the various events were accordingly very Owing to the time taken to balance totalizator pools with win-and-place betting, the racing got behind ‘•ehedule, especially as the intervals v.ere shorter than usual and the volume of betting was greater than last ycai. The last race was run an hour behind time, but no doubt the club will be ab’e to overcome this for the conclud ng day to-' morrow. • The principal event, ‘lie Egmont Steeplechase. was won by the South Island candidate Rasouli, ,7«th Forest Glow second. The Tonga ice Hurdles w won by Contact, with Brigadore and Ruaform in the minor places. Gold Mission won the open sprint. The I rentham trainer, T. R- George, turned out the winners of two races p rost ration winning the Mcßae Cup. and Boomerang the Tawhiti Havk for Mr H. '' • Moss. Flammarion continued his winning way by scoring in the hack sprint, and De Trop sprang the s*jr».nse of the day by winning the Hack Scurry. Consistent Contact > s-h.'..«1, la\ou it< •••th ways fur the Tongahoe Hurdles, was niinded at the hurdle in front of the stands and came to grief, but the second favourite pulled backers through, the con.v stent Con tact winning nicely from the improved Brigadore. Cuntact and Bean »star were disputing the lead at the first hurdle, but Beau Har was then taken intu the lead and was six lengths in front passing the stands, with Contact. Don Erma, Glenvane and Brigadore to'lowing in ’hat order. Soloist came tu grief here, but Beau Star was still b aling along •dear of Contact, Ruaform, Don Erma, Brigadore and Sporting Song a> they ran down the ba<k. Contact hooked ibe hurdle near the five furlongs but commenced to make up his leeway aoain. Turning into the straight Beau s”ar’ was just ahead of Ccntact, with sporting Song. Brigade. •, Ruaform, and Don Erma following, but < ontact .an into the lead at the last obstacle and won bv a length from the fast-nnmn-in<r Brigadore. Three lengths Vuk was Ruaform. a neck in front or sporting Song with Beau Star almost in hne. Don Erma, Glenvane, and \ was the order of the others, uit.i an loff last. R. Webby, rid... ot Soloist, was not injured. Flammarion’s Hack Sprint Flammari.m was beat backed >n 'he Teie-1-apli Ha'ck Handicap, and duh won’from the second favourite, trouvaille. . , Rustem delayed the star, considerable, but eventually got away as "ell as anything else, though Flammanon and Trouvaille showed out first ahead Of Rustem. Mustang, Ngatirainn and Kentuckv .Song. The field soon commenced to string out. and Flammarion led across the to clear of Mustang. Rustem Trouvaille. Ngatirahin and Meritor Nothing else had a chance at this stage, and Flammarion showed the wav into the straight ahead of Rustem and Mustang, with Trouvai'le Script. »atirahiri ami Kentucky '•ong nearMt of the others. In the run to the judge, Flammarion did bes' to win by a len-th from Trouvaille, who was tour engths ahead of Mustang. Rustem was fourth and Ngatirahiri and Script followed. ahead of Glenthawn, Kentucky Song, and Silvanu®. Gold Mission's Splint l.imulus was better backed in the sprint than Gold Mission, but the laticr won handsomely at the finish. Windscreen was slow to move out and l.imulus and Refresher showed out in front of Boughal and Gold Mission Running across the top Boughal had ■one up io second place behind Limu?us. and Refresher and Gold Mission were next, with a good gap back to slippery. Limulus was just in front of Boughal on the turn for Lome, with Refresher and Gold Mission closing up on them and Slippery commencing a run. The field bunched at the distance and then Gold Mission asserted her claim, coming on to win by a lengtn. Boughal. who had dropped back, came • again to get second place bv a head i from Refresher, who was a similar distance in front of Slippery. Limulus »as nearly two lengths back. Steeplechase to Rasouli Transact, bozie, Invictu.-. Monarchy, and Illawarra were absentees from the Egmont Steeplechase field, and Rasouli and Forest Glow shared favouritism, eventually filling first and second plaeings. Running for the double the first time, Valpeen assumed the lead I'ioin Forest Glow, Petrarch and Rasouli, and thus •her ran down the back .Ttiftch, with Sohialtes tipping out at the board fence ,rear the half-mile peg. Valpeen was joined by Rasouli at the double the next time round, and Forest Glow and t’opev were next, ahead of Petrarch. The leaders seesawed oxer the next , four furlongs, with Forest Glow aud Rasouli finally heading Valpeen, and Petrarch also headed the topweight. Rasouli disputed the issue with Forest Glow over the last three obstacles and finally asserted his claim o»’er the last furlong to win bv five lengths from Forets t Glow, with Petrarch seven lengths back. Valpeen was ten lengths further ‘hack, and there was a gap of JOO yards to Copey. A Double-figure Dividend Sir Tommy was barked down tn a C short price for the Hack Scurry, but

the winner turned up in De Trop. who was at a good double-figure price on the “win” machine. Lucrece was slow to move, and Wahi ne Rui, Debut. Sir Tommy. Erebus, Lady Briar and Lady Hoariri was the early order. Sir Tommy, however, was soon taken to the front, with Erebus, De Trop, Debut and Night Spi nearest of the others. Turning into the straight Erdbus had headed Sir Tommy, with a gap to De Trop and Night Spi but the leaders compounded and De Trop came on to win by half a length from Erebus. Night Spi was two lengths back, followed by Sir Tommy, Ladv Hoariri, Wahine Nui, Joviality and Valroy. Prostration Wins Mcßae Cup Alchemic was favourite for the McRae Cup, with Prostration second in request, and the latter eventually won in a good finish. Running out of the straignt, Alchemic was just ahead of St. Clara, Prostration, Tahurangi, One Whetu, Lapel, Knock Out and Peter Ja'ckson. Tahurangi ran up into second place behind Alchemic six furlongs from home, with Prostration, St. Clara and One Whetu nearest of the others. Tanurangi had run up alongside Alchemic at the halfmile, with Prostration moving up. Thus they turned for home, the field bunching at the distance. Then Prostration asserted himself and held off Lapel’s challenge to win bv a neck A head •behind Lapel was Tahurangi. and then came Alchemic, One Whetu and St. Clara Boomerang Wins Easily Tn a good pool on the concluding event, Le Grand, Boomerang, and Royal Feast were fairly evenly backed, and Boomerang won easily from two lessfancied candidates in Leo Colossus and Hunting Queen. Koreroa and Corowa moved out ahead of Royal Feast and Boomerang, and then Royal Feast went into the lead, only to give wav to Boomerang, who piloted Calshot, Royal Feast. Leo Colossus and Hunting Queen across the top. The order was much the same on the home turn, but once straightened up for the run to the judge, Boomerang came right away to win by five lengths. Leo Colossus came through to get second place, two lengths ahead of Hunting Queen, fhen came Calshot Corowa, Royal Feast. Orac anil Le Grand.
