HER BLACK EYE

“LOVE BEFORE BREAKFAST” A magnificent purple bruise, the colour and almost the size of a pansy is hanging on one of the most beautiful cypg in Hollywood as a result, of the funniest movie scene filmed in years. Tiie eye belongs to Carole Lombard, and she acquired it from her leading man, Preston Foster in a coffee-shop battle royal staged in “Love Before Breakfast,” which she is making for Universal from Faith Baldwin’s popular tale “Spinster Dinner.” According to the script Carole Lombard was suppos'd to receive a. tap in the eye, but the resulting braise was to have been applied by the make-up man. As eight husky footballers were involved in the mix-up, and during the rehearsals the men shadow-boxed white Miss Lombard kept off bhe scene. In the filming of the scene Miss Lombard daringly walked into the fusillade of lists, trying to separate the men, and getting an occasional slap herself as the. script directed. Her black eye came unexpectedly and nearly ruined the scene, for the cameramen and all the workers on the set appreciated the humour of the situation.
