SCHOOL AFFAIRS I M.D.H.S. COMMITTEE MEETING J A meeting of the newly-elected committee of the Marton District High Scuu-.l was ield on Tuesday evening. Dr. It. A. Church presided and also present were Messrs. C. Al. Holdaway, J. H. Dashwood, A. Gracie, H. T. Ellison, H. Frederick, L. Williams, Barnett, G. C. Thomas (secretary) and the headmaster, Air. A. W. Tucker. Before discussing the business the chairman said that the committee were out to do their best. Thinking over the duties of a school committee he came to the conclusion that they were there to control and use the money granted by the Education Board to the best of their ability. In every way the committee should co-operate with | the headmaster and his staff and he felt sure that the job would enlighten itself. Permission was granted to Airs. 8. Hunt for the use of the school assembly hall for the night of May 11. The headmaster’s report stated that the attendance hau suffered through an epidemic of mumps and whooping cough, the percentage being 80 per cent, in the primary department and 91 per cent, in the secondary. Attention was drawn to several repairs required. A suggestion by Air. Tucker that the caretaker’s report should be made through him, brought forth much discussion and it was decided that the janitor’s monthly report be forwarded through the headmaster to the commitThe visiting committee (Alessrs. Dashwood and Frederick) reported after an inspection of the grounds that buildings and sheds would be locked. At present they were left open. There was a large amount of hedge clippings left under the hedges and they recommended that this should be tidied. An application from Air. Kilham for the use of the school assembly hall for gymnasium purposes, was left until the next meeting. The resignation of Air. W. R. AlcNab as assistant-master was received with regret. Mr. AlcNab shortly takes a position as sole teacher at the Western Rangitikei School. Air. Tucker expressed regret at losing Air. AlcNab. During the short time he had been at the school Air. Tucker had found At. AlcNab a valuable worker for the school. A letter of appreciation of his services is to be forwarded to Mr. AlcNab, congratulating him on his anpui in merit. Dr. R. A. Church and Mr. L. Wiliams were appointed as a ■■•isiting committee for the next month. Dental clinic committee delegates appointed were: Messrs. T. H. Ellison and C. Al. Holdaway. The board’s attention is to be drawn to the fact that the pavement in front of the school needs and a leak in the headmaster’s study needs investigation. Committee meetings are ,o be he’G on the second Tuesday of thu month. SURPRISE PARTY A surprise party tendered to Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Whale on Monday evening was sponsored by friends of the young couple and not by the Athletic Hockey Club. THE CIVIC THEATRE ‘THE ARIZONIAN” The roar of revolvers and volleys from shot-guns punctuate the thrilling action of the new Richard Dix drama, ‘‘The Arizonian,” screening to-night and Friday at the Civic Theatre. “The Arizonian” depicts in exacting detail the early settling of the West, and the warfare that raged between outlaws and peace officers who were iight’ng to bring order to the turbulent ;owns of the frontier. A RUGBY BATTLE A Rugby battle was fought on the Marton Park on Wednesday afternoon, when a drawn game resulted between the machine-gunners and the mounteds. It was not a very interesting game, but the players seemed to enjoy it. Both sides were given plenty of latitude as far as infringements were concerned. The mounteds missed their horses very much. R. Cameron. A. Alar-sh-all, and T. Aloore were about the best of an even side, of “greens,” while Ireland, R. Lewis, and D. Rose were the “shiners” for the blues. The übiquity of Aloore was a feature of the game. The game ended in a draw, 12 points all. Air H. S. Porteous refereed. PERSONAL Air J. H. Dashwood resumed duty at the Courthouse to-day after having been on holiday. BOUT POSTPONED AIAJRTON WRESTLING CLUB The Alarton Wrestling Club has been advised from the Wellington headquarters that, owing to the unexpected departure from New Zealand of two of the professional wrestlers, it has been found necessary to re-arrange the allotted dates, and that the bout arranged for Marton on the 14th. instant will have to be postponed to a later date. Arrangements whicn were in train have now been abandoned accordingly by the club. As soon as a definite date is fixed a further announcement will be made. A DANCE A dance has been arranged for the night of Wednesday, Alay 13, at the Tutaenui Hall. The floor promises to be in excellent condition and a sumptuous supper will be dispensed by a willing band of workers. Waitere’s Orchestra has been engaged, and as usual will supply the dancers w'ith good music. There will be novelty dances galore and everyone is assured of an enjoyable evening. The prices for admission are: Ladies Is 6d and gentlemen 2s. and for the benefit of the Afarton people a free bus will leave the station at 7.45 p.ni.
