BRAKES AND HEADLIGHTS

CHECK MADE IN CITY COMMENTS BY INSPECTOR. JJAZZLING LIGHTS A J’ROBJJIM. “At ihe request of the Commissioner of Transport, another organised check on brakes and headlights of motor vehicles was carried qul over a period of seven days during the month of August last,” reports the city traffic inspector (Air. H. E. Tipper) in his annual report to the City Council. ‘‘This necessitated considerable night work for Inspector Alinnell ami myself, checking up the headlights. “The following schedule will some indication of our activities during the period mentioned:— Number of vehicles tested .. 915 Number carrying certificates 221 i Number with defective brakes 27 I Prosecutions for defective ! brakes 19 j “In regard to the prosecution/, I j may add that only in cases where the brakes were found to be totally inefficient was action taken against, the drivers. Apart from the ten vehicles mentioned above, the number scheduled as defective required only minor adjustments. “A word of explanation may be necessary in regard to certificates accepted. When a. driver of a motor vehicle produced a recent certificate from a reputable garage, stating that ; the brakes and headlights had been adjusted to meet the requirements of . the Alotor Vehicle Regulations, that certificate was accepted by the inspector, and the vehicle passed without further examination. “In regard to headlights, the problem is still a big one. It was noticed that lights which appeared to be dazzling or out of focus, on being tested were found to be within the requirements of the regulations. This was apparently due to constructional complexities. Lights on certain makes of cars are difficult to adjust with a view to eliminating all dazzle.”
