HEALTH CAMP APPEAL

NECESSARY FOR WANGANUI i PROJECT NOW IN HAND i MEETING OF CITIZENS TO-NIGHT : I he necessity of a health camp in I Wanganui has often been stressed. Public-spirited people interested in the i matter have frequently expressed their opinions, with the result that steps are now being taken to raise sufficient funds to permit the satisfactory functioning of a health camp in Wanganui for at least 12 months. At a publicmeeting, to be held in the City Council Chambers to-night, several speakers will outline the plan of campaign by which this money can be arranged. The meeting has been called by the Mayor ••f Wanganui (Mr. W. J. Rogers?. Since the health camp trustees were appointed they have accumulated assets to the value of close on £3500. These assets are permanently vested in rhe trustees for health camp purposes. During the period in which temporary health camps were held at Turakina. under the supervision of Dr. E. Gunn, over 2000 children received treatment. It is due to the success obtained by Dr. Gunn at these camps that the Government has given its hearty approval of the scheme and has recently conducted a health-camp campaign, as a result of which over £lO,OOO was raised in the Dominion. Wanganui has received £335 15s Id as its share of this fund. The money is to be used to defray the costs vf these children who are admitted 1o the camp, but whose parents are unable to contribute towards their support. Ihe need vf a health camp in Wanganui is considered to be urgent. A large number vf children ii the district controlled by the ‘Wanganui Education Board have been medically extaained and recommended for health •an treatment. Only four children in This large territory could be given the benefit this - year owing to the lack of an institution in Wanganui, and the baited capacity of the vamp at Otaki.
