CAPITAL PUNISHMENT
AUSTRALIAN CONTROVERSY SENTENCE ON JONES COMMUTED Received May 5, 11.20 p.m. SYDNEY, May 5. The Minister of Justice, Mr. Martin, announced in the Assembly to-day that Cabinet had recommended the Executive Council to commute the death sentence “recorded” on Jones to imprisonment for the terms of his natural life. Mr. Martin said the Government had given the fullest consideration to the fresh evidence brought forward on behalf of Jones and had also obtained the opinion of three King’s Counsellors whether the recording of the death sentence was tantamount to a reprieve. One such opinion was that the Executive Council could legally and validly proceed either to carry out the death sentence or commute it However, in all the surrounding circumstances, Cabinet had decided to recommend the commutation of the death sentence. The Minister of Justice told the Assembly that he had no statement to make with regard to Hickey.
