CONFERENCE OPENS ADDRESS BY MR. HUGHES MELBOURNE, May 4. The seventh annual conference on cancer opened with an address by the Federal Minister of Health, Mr. W. M. Hughes, who urged tlhe establishment of an Australian Medical Research Council to cc-ordinate research. He also recommended that each capital city m Australia should possess a modern tumour institute, where patients could obtain highly-specialised treatment. Medical practitioners would be able to send to these institutes all but the simplest cases. New Zealand delegates to the conference will arrive on Wednesday. CANCER NOT INCREASING DR. CUMPSTON’S OPINION MELBOURNE, May 4. Dr. J. H. Cumpston, in his presidential address discussed ’whether cancer was increasing. He said that the death rate from cancer to 65 years had remained stationary, but after that ‘age had increased, because cancer was now diagnosed where previously death was attributed to senility. It was therefore reasonable to conclude that within the past 30 years there had not been ar. actual increase, while the prospects for cancer sufferers were now much, brighter than ten years ago, because of the developments in research, X-ray, and radium.
