harriers

B,

JOG-TROT.")

ibis month will see. harriers running in earnest once again. The Wanganui Harrier Club has already opened its season and c.-n Saturday next, the Y.M.C.A. Club is holding j;.s oflicial opening. * • * • I lie Mayor of Wanganui, Mr. W. J. Rogers, is to officially open Are I’.M.C’.A. Club’s season al 2.3 U p. JH . ai the Y..MJJ.A. building. Members of the Wanganui and Alartun Clubs will be present and will be entertained at afternoon tea at the conclusion of the run. For this purpose a strong ladies’ committee has been set up. Although weather conditions were decidedly bleak last Saturday afternc-on ooth the Marton and Wanganui Clubs held their usual weekly runs. The maI jority of Wellington clubs were also in action, the Scottish Club having a field of 40 competitors. The Mastertou Harrier Club had a field c-f 15 competitors on Saturday over a five-mile course. E. Cresswell G Kempton and J. Mulvey were the fiist three men home. This club should undoubtedly have a good membership tlus season and keener members as the Wellington provincial championships have been allotted to- this district. Tho other club in Masterton, the Kaitere Club, should also experience a good season. The run at the opening of the YLM.C.A. Club's season on Saturday will be held under the whistle c-f t'he club captain over a distance of about three miles. There will be a run in over the final quarter of a mile. Runners are advised to wear sand shoes for the event os a considerable amount of read will be covered. The Y'.AI.U.A, Club’s list of active members this season shows a good increase on last season and this is very heartening for the club officials. An honorary list has been opened and already a number of members of this category have been enrolled. The secretary of the Y.M.C.A. Club has alr'ady received useful donations from two of its vice-presidents. Towards the latter part of next month, the Wanganui and Masterton •Clubs will meet in their first contest for the Benson Trophy. Prior to this contest will be the annual harrier rally at Dannevirke, on Saturday, June 13, at which the Wanganui (Hub will bo represented. As the Wellington cross-country championships are to be decided about the middle Saturday in August, the West Coast championships wili also probably be held about this date. Of last year's West Coast (N. 1. team, the majority of the members will be competing again this season. K. Johnston, Wanganui Club, is taking an actixe part, om c a;igin. vide stiff competition for the big men such as McCieady, Blomfield, Kent and Forsgren. A sextet such as that will certainly give scope for some highly attractive match-making. Joe Kopach Woods, who slugged his way to a surprise xvin in Wellington, looks small alongside the leviathans of the game who have dropped in in the last season or two. but he certainly can take it. And, having taken it, can hand it back. The Kopach around which the rest of his name is assembled is really his surname. He grew the Woods as a nern de guerre, but, finding that he was being called bv first one name and then the other, he decided to use th-em both. The New Zealand Wrestling Union advises that two famous American wrestlers —Chief Little Wolf and “Jumping Joe” Savc-ldi —will arrive in New Zealand in Jun-e to work on the Dominion-Commonwealth circuit. Their arrival will be timely, for by that time three men at present wrestling in the Dominion—Wade, Mchringer and another—will be campaigning in Australia. These men will depart fre-m New Zealand as soon as their immediate engagements have been completed. Jaget Singh, who was in the Dominion last year, is at present wrestling in Suva, but will join Wade and company in Australia at an early date.
