VALEDICTORY A large crowd gathered in the Town Hall supper room on Tuesday evening to bid farewell to Air. Pat Larmer, a 1 popular local resident for several years, who is leaving Bulls during the week-end to take up a position in Auckland. Mr. J. H. Ellery was in > charge of the progressive euchre tournament, and the prize-winners were Miss Marjorie Carter and Mr. Jack Homes, while consolation prizes were awarded to Airs. T. H. Green and Mr. Jack Bromley. A sumptuous supper was provided by the ladies, and the rest of the evening was filled with dancing, Mr. C. 11. Edwards kindly supplying the music. During the interval Mr. ,1. E. Walker, chairman of the Town Board, spoke of the good qualities of the guest of the evening, Air. Larmer being popular with all, and he could rest assured that he carried away with him the best wishes of people of the town and country for his future success and happiness. On behalf of those present and others who were unable tn attend, Mr. Walker handed a pocket wallet, fountain pen and »Schaafer pencil t<> Mr. Larmer, to the strains of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Air. AL U. Gould, who had employed Mr. Larmer. said that he could not wish for a more conscientious and painstaking assistant, and while regretting his departure, felt sure that he would do well wherever he went. Air. Larmer, who was warmlv greeted, thanked the previous speakers for their very kind remarks, and said that he would miss his many friends in Bulls, but. would come back to see them all. It was nice to feel, he added, that he did not have an enemy in the district, and he felt it an honour that so many had come along to say goodbye to him. His parents lived in Auckland, and he felt that his place was there. In conclusion. he asked them to show the same kindness and consideration to his successor, who was a very fine young fellow. (Laughter). GENERAL NEWS Owing to Thursday being the longnight for business people, the Town Board's monthly meeting has been postponed until April 16. To-morrow (Friday) an all-day pairs tournament will be played on the local bowling green. Air. and Airs. Harry Edwards left yesterday to spend the Easter in Wellington. sident (Mr. C. A. McLaren). Mr. AlcLaren, in responding, paid a tribute to Air. Hill whom he described as a man of great energy and ability, who had filled the position of president of the R.S.A. with credit and distincI’rior to his departure for To Aroha the 'Taihape Railway staff presented Mr. A. G. Glover with a handsome suit case as a token of esteem. The presentation was made by the stationmaster. who referred to the efficient manner in which Air. Glover had discharged his duties and made mention of the cordial relations existing between the departing railway officer ami the other members of the staff. Messrs. Mullany, P. Fennessy and K. Walker also spoke. Air. Glover returned thanks in a neat little speech. On Alonday evening Aliss Luxton. who is to be married shortly, was farewelled by rhe Alethodist Church congregation and presented with an electric. kettle, and a case of fish knives and forks. The presentation was made by Rev. H. Goodman, who referred in glowing terms to Aliss Luxton’s work on behalf of the Sunday School and Bible Class. ATessrs. C. Darvill. R. Alayson and Aliss Darvill also spoke. Miss Luxton appropriately responded. VALEDICTORY. MR. D. RUAIBAL. An extremely popular railwayman in the person of Air. D. Rumbal, who is retiring from the service to settler in the Whangarei district, was farewelled nt a social function held in his honour in the Railway Hall on Tuesday evening and presented with a set of bowls ( by rhe local railway staff. The presentation was made by Air. J. I). C. Davis, . stationmaster, who paid a high tribute to Air. Rumbal *s popularity and many fine qualities and wished him every sue- . cess in his new sphere. Miller (district traffic manager, Wanganui), W. J. Langbein (assistant district engineer). W. Butcher (assistant loco, engineer), A. Grant (district business agent). ID. Munro (Taumarunui), E. A. King. J. IL Dellow, R. Weeber (stationmaster, Mataroa), C. Gordon and IL Howden. Mr. Rumbal feelingly responded. During the evening items were contributed by the Melody Boys’ Orchestra and Messrs. J. E. Hamill, T. Luxton, C. Cherry. Barnett and W. P. Miller. All* branches of the railway service were represented at the function, which wasalso attended by members of the Taihape Bowling Club, with which Air. Rumbal was associated. The guest of honour was inspector of permanent way at Taihape for a number of years, and intends to live in retirement at Kamo, near Whangarei.
