Close won the bridge to-beach swimming race on Sunday, cold weather and windswept water marring the enioyment of the swim. The time taken was 284 minutes. J- Richardson was second, wth E. Mr. Maxwell, presenting the cup, remarked that the time was creditable considering the weather. KAKARAMEA SCHOOL PICNIC Kakaramea School held.their annual picnic at Ngaire on Friday in ideal weather. Four car-loads and a lorryload of children participated. Races were held and fruit, soft drinks and sweets added to the enjoyment of the outing for the children. EIGHTIETH BIRTHDAY Mrs. A. Gilshnan, Kakaramea’s “grand old lady,” celebrated her eightieth birthday on Friday. Local residents and visitors from many parts attended, making it a happy occasion for the guest of honour. Rev. W. H. Wilson gave the congratulations of tie visitors to Mrs. Gilshnan. Mrs Armstrong, youngest daughter, Mrs Murray, eldest daughter, and Mr. B. Gilshnan, eldest son, replied. A handsome cake, adorned with SO candles and tiny horseshoes, was one of the features of the gathering and the candles were lit by the sons and blown out by the family. A song by Mrs. McDonald and recitation by the Rev. Wilson were much enjoyed. Relations present were: Mrs. R. A. Adams (sister), Mesdames Richardson, Pukekohe, E. E. Murray, Te Kuiti, J.
