At 5.30 a.m. a teamster, who was lying awake in his quarters in rhe manager’s house, noticed a glow as of a fire, and aroused the occupants. The house was alreadv burning fiercelv and nothing could be done to save it. Thp house was a landmark in the district and contained more than 40 rooms. At rangemen’s recently had been made to pul] it down for the timber, which was all heart totara and heart kauri and wrts in a good Ftatd of preservation. Th a work of demolition should have begun to-day. The house, which was the p opertv of the estate of the late Mr J- Connolly, formerly M.P. for Mid-Canter-bury. was insured for £2OOO in the Ocean.
