Mrs. Soundy has returned to Wanganui from a visit to Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. R. McKellar, Wellington, were visitors to Wanganui during the week-end. Mil-. G. Clark, Rotorua, is on a visit to Wanganui. Miss W. Muir was a Wanganui visitor to Wellington during the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. B. Eberhart, Wellington, have been visiting Wanganui. Miss F. M. Hill, Rotorua, is visiting Wanganui. Miss Dorothy Polson will leave this we-ek by the Monowai for Sydney, on route for England and South Africa. Mrs. 8. Billingfliurst, of Maxwell, and Mr. lan Billinghuret, will leave to-day on a motor tour of the north. Miss «T. Harrison, of New South Wales, who has been touring New Zealand, is becoming well-known as a breeder of stud Southdown sheep, and has tiie distinction of being one of the few' women, and the youngest (she is only 19 years of age) to be engaged in thin occupation. White in this country she has been inspecting sheep, and has bought close on JOO ewes to be added to her stud at Rylstone, 150 miles from Sydney, and named the Lo wanna Southdown Stud. For the last three years she has been exhibiting at leading shown. in New South Wales and lias met with much success. Dame Laura Knight, whose appointment as a Royal Academician was recently reported by cable, is the first woman to receive this distinction since 1709, the date of the foundation of the academy. Among the original academicians were Angelica Kauifmann. and Mary Mot-er. The first woman since then to be elected an associate was Mrs. Annie Swynnerton, who died in 1933. The only woman A.R.A, now is Mr>. Dod Procter, who was elected in 1931. Dame Laura had been an associate since 1927. She is well known as a painter of scenes in the theatre liresj-ing room, the ballet, and the circus. Her husband is Mr. Harold Knight, the portrait- painter, who was elected A.R.A. in J92S. Friends of Miss Gertrude Owen, for some, years general secretary of the O.uiatchuicii Young Women’s Christian Association, will be interested to hear that she received the honour of the 0.8. E. at the New Year in recognition of her work for women and girls in the Malay States. Since leaving New Zealand'’, Miss Owen has represented the Young. Women’s Christian Association in Australia, Japan, China, Singapore, and Genic'a, where she attended lhe last World’b Young Women’s Christian Association Conference in June, addressing the conference on the special work of the association, and its responsibility to the girls and women of Singapore. Malay Hiatw, and Dutch East Indies. Mbs Owen has been in Singapore for the last 10 years, and spent last, year on furlough in England.
