RIVER EROSION
WAiTAKI PRESENTS PROBLEM .INSPECTION BY MIN ISTER [ Per Prew Association. J Q/MARU. March 16. The serious position arising through ero-sion of the south bank of the Waitaki River above sVaitaki Bridge caused by the floods in the river, engaged the attention of Hon. R. Semple (Minister of Public Works) on his way south to Dunedin to-day. Mr Semple was accompanied by Mrs Semple, Mr Wood (Deputy Chief Engineer of the Department), Mr T. M. Ball (District Engineer), and Rev. A. H. Noidmeyer, M.P. In a recent inspection of the locality Mr Ball was impressed with the real danger existing through the river not only eating away good land, but also taking a new course that in flood might break through the bank at the south end of the bridge and cut off road and rail communication. After an inspection of '.he river this afternoon, Mr Semple said he was impressed with the urgency of the matter and instructed his officers to make a survey of the position without delay with a view to commencing protective works on the river bank.
