ELIMINATING DANGER POINTS PROGRESS OF WORK I P“r Pr»s« Aasoc’aCon. T WELLINGTON, March 13. A statement as to progress of the elimination of dangerous level crossings throughout New Zealand, was made today by the Minister of Railways, in replv to Press criticism tn Christchurch, which mentioned the programme of joint action discussed by the Main Highways Board. Railways Board, and Unemployment Board last July, and voiced the hope that in the change of administration the work would not drop out of view. In replv. the Minister said that 34 crossings were selected as requiring attention first, and of these 23 were regarded as most urgent and were approved for the commencement of the programme, it being considered that this portion of the programme would take annroxiniat el v IS months to complete. The position reached in respect of each of the 23 crossings is as follows:- - Auckland District. Hoteo: Dra"t plans just completed proposing a road diversion eliminating two crossings instead of an overbridge fiiriinaling one. Tirau: Surveys in hand. Waihi: Construction of overbridge in progress. To Kauwhata: Plans in hand. Huapai: Plans in hand. Taupiri: Pl.-.ns in hand. Tarukenga: Survey in hand. Wanganui District. —Oeo. Piriaka. Kai Iwi and Mokoia* Plans in hand. Normanbv: Surveys in ban'!. Wellington Distrid —Porirua. Par.iparaumn and Longbnrn: Field work in hand. Maharr.hara: Plans prepared for ro:*u diversion. Christchurch Dist i ict.—Styx: Proposals practicallv complete and work should be advertised shortly. Sockburn: Plans are well forward and proposals should be completed in the next three weeks. Brunner: Small amount of field data required for completion of plans. Steel has been ordered. Dunedin District.—l>eborah : Subway to be provided. Steel for overbridge has been ordered and as soon ss this comes to hand the work can be commenced. Karti’i: Ramp is in hand and bridge plans are well forward. Calmerston: Survev in hand. Invercargill District. - I.orneville: Plans are in course nf pi pp;iration.
