MANDATED TERRITORY
AUSTRALIAN ATTITUDE NOT TO BE RELINQUISHED. Received March 13, 11.55 p.m. CANBERRA, March 13. “It is unthinkable that Australia should even consider handing over any territory,” said the leader of the Government in the Senate, Sir George Pearce, to-day, in the course of a statement on the mandated P-nds. Referring specifically to New Guinea, Sir George said that by virtue of its geographical position, its natural har hours and its facilities for naval and military aircraft, it waa of consider able strategic value to Australia so long as the existing form of control and administration obtained. He added that the claim that colonial territory provided an outlet for surplus population was not borne out by settlement figures.
