LAWN TENNIS

WANGANUI TENNIS TEAM THE SELECTION CRITICISED. Sir, —The selectors of the Wanganui Lawn Tennis Association are sending a very weak team of men on Saturday to Hawke’s Bay to play for the Christie Cup. The second half of tins team is composed of players who have never been really lirst-chu-is and are hardly recognised by the association, let alone play in a Christie Cup matc-h. They are certainly on the lad der, but some of them on the ladder have not played matches for years; &o tennis players in the Wanganui Association reckon it’s a farce. A good number of the young players who ought to be on the ladder cau’t get on 1 it, for some reason known to the Wanganui officials. I am certain I could pick a team available from the minor association or the B grade to give the men of the Wanganui reps, a good game. I believe the team I picked would win. This is purely the outcome of the local association not giving the young players a chance against tho more experienced players. In this match, if the best team could not travel, om or two of the budding young player* should have been included to gain ex peiience—not men who have been trice before by the association. If tilt W.L.T.A, had played 50 men from the inter-club teams A and B at different week-ends, the same as the Wellington Association docs, tho local selectors would have known bow the playvrs were ranked. I am sure most tennis plaj ers here are disappointed with the team going to Hawke’s Bay to play for the Christie Cup, and only one thing will result —a defeat. lam still hopeful enough to look for more improvement next year.—l am, etc., ‘•'INTERESTED.” Wanganui, Alarch 13, 1036.
