W.D.F.U.

WANGANUI BRANCH The usual monthly meeting of the Wanganui branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held last Wednesday, there being present: Airs. AlcPhail (president), Mesdaines Lilburn, Bly th, Wickham, Butcher, Hair, Howard, Anderson, Scott, Pollock, Soundy and Eantham, and Misses Polson, Morgan and Alatthews (hon. sec.). Reports of t-hc Boys’ Afforestation Camp activities and hospital visiting were given by the president, who then asked the committee io continue in the very necessary work of assisting the sufferers from floods in the Waitotara district. Afuch still remained to be done to alleviate the distress and loss there, and, as .this is one of the organisation’s special fields of activity, the further appeal again met with a very sympathetic response. Tho matter of transport to Kai Iwi for the combined picnic of the Farmers’ Union and the Women s (Division, to take place to day, was arranged and details of the branch’s annual garden party at Airs. Collier’s, St. John’s Hill, to be held on Saturday, 29th inst., were also finalised. Members and friends are asked to help by attending and by giving what they can to the various stalls —meat, produce, cakes, sweets, etc. As the effort is to raise funds for the community chest, from which the many branches draw their financial help for those country women a a J children (and others) who are in nsel cf medical and educational or other assistance, it is confidently hoped t'aat the response will be a ready one. Before commencing the agend i, Mrs. AlePhail extended a very warm welcome to Airs. Livingstone, of Hawke's Bay, who, with her husband, was visiting Wanganui as the guest of Mrs. and Miss Polson, College St re. .it. At the conclusion of business, Airs. Livingstone gave a most interesting and inspiring account of a new scheme which she and other members vndcitook in their district, whereby a number of town children wore taxon, for part of the summer vacation, into the country and there allowed to discover for themselves some of the beauty and charm of rural life. An abundance of fresh milk, cream, eggs, butter, fruit, vegetables and prime meat soon worked a very beneficial change in the- Jilt e town-dwellers, and their reluctance to rturn to the city was the highest compliment their host and hosuss could have received. A, very appreciative vote of thanks was accorded the speaker, the president including in it the naae of Air. Livingstone, who so ably seconded his lady in her splendid scheme.
