VOITRH’S two winners BUSTARID TAKES .STAKES Received Feb. 9, 7.5 pan. MELBOURNE, Feb. 9. At the Williamstown races New Zealand riders rather than New Zealand horses distinguished themselves, earning high praise for his handling of Bustard in the Williamstown Stakes. Voitrc rode another winner during the day, while A. Reed brilliantly won the Electric Handicap on Night of Love in 1.271, equalling the course record. Limond Lad was second. Lobengula was unplaced in the Maiden Plate. Greenhorn was unplaced, in the Wyndham Handicap. East Cape was unplaced, in the February Trial. Wiliernside was unplaced in the Marine Handicap. Results:— Williamstown Stakes.—Bustard 8.3 (Voitre) 1, Sylvandale 9.10 (Munro) 2. Marabou 9.0 (McUarten) 3. Six started, including North Cape. Neck; half a length. Time, 2.6| —a race record. ENGLISH RECORDS TIMES OPEN TO DOUBT MOST VALUABLE STAKES English records of all kinds are interesting to Australians, and though some of the appended timvs round exceptionally fast, a downhill run is a contributing factor at Brighton and in short races at Epsom. There arc others open to doubt, states the Sydney Referee. In the Ccsarewitch the start out of sight of the stands, and it is the same at the mile and a-half starting point, from which The Bastart wa credited with doing 2.23. Au embankment used to hide the mile and a-half starting-point at Newmarket, and the dropping of a flag by a man nome distance from the start indicated when the horses were off. It was the same in the, Cesarewitch, and, without detracting fre-m the merit of English horses, anyone with acknowledge of time, and Newmarket, will recognise the impossibility of The Bastard (now at the stud in Queensland, and known as The Buzzard) and West Wicklow doing the times credited them. It is probable that, in each case the man with the flag was locking away when a start was affected, and did not drop it until the horses were well on their way. Newmarket does not favour exceptional time, and 2.23 for a mile and a half is 4£sec faster than anything recorded in Australia. West Wicklow's 3.41 2-5 for two and a-quarter miles c-n that track is equally improbable. That would be about 3.16 for two miles, and is certainly difficult of acceptance. In a Melbourne Cap the best for two miles is 3.22|, jointly recorded by Windbag and Spearfclt.
