EMPIRE DEFENCES
CONFERENCE OF EXPERTS MORE NAVAL ACTIVITY. [By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright J LONDON, Jan. 13. The Sun-Herald services says that Empire defence, including precautions in the Mediterranean, Naval Conference. Air Force expansion, and Navy rebuilding, was discussed at a meeting of the Government experts to-day, over which Mr. Baldwin presided, Mr. Neville Chamberlain, Mr. A. Eden, the Defence Ministers, and Chiefs of Staffs of all of the services attended. The Sun-Herald service understands that the naval estimates which will shortly be presented to Parliament, will provide, in addition to several new cruisers and destroyers, two new battleships to replace battleships which have reached the age limit under the Washington Treaty. The Sun-Herald service says: Meanwhile. several of Britain’s most famous ships have been reconstructed or are being reconstructed, new armour and most modern fittings making them a> formidable as anything in the world.
