MEETING OF COUNCIL GENERAL MATTERS DISCUSSED. The first meeting of the Wangpi.ui Ci*,/ Council for 1936 was hj.l last night the Mayor (Mr. W. J. Rogers) presiding. Ap'd »gies were r«‘ee ; vcd from Crs. J. Siddells, J. J. Scot*, G. I. Jon n s and G. H. Tntt. The Mayor extended the season’s greetings to councillors and their wives on behalf of himself and Mrs. Rogers. A copy of the judgment in the Court appeal in regard to Victorian loans was received from the Municipal Association, which asked fnr the council’s com ments on the matter. On the motion of the Mayor, it was decided that th** whole question of future action should be loft to the Municipal Association for discussion at its annual conference in March. Permission was given to the Wanganui Amateur Athletic and Cycling Chib to use Cook's Gardens on the afternoon and evening of Saturday, February 29. The Mayor said the Wanganui Cricket Association had the sole use of Cook’s Gardens on Saturdays hut on this occasion the association had generously waived its rights for the day. The Wanganui East branch of the Labour Partv was granted permission to hold a picnic at Aramoho Park on January 29, while a similar request from the Wanganui Waterside Workers’ Union was also granted. The Tramway Committee was empowered to secure quotations for the purchase of a new truck, the matter to be finalised at the next meeting of the council in three weeks’ time. The council decided to impose a penaltv of 10 per cent, on all rates unpaid on February 14. The Mayor said that a well-known resident hart suggested to him that the lights in the library building should be lowered in order tn improve the lighting. The matter was referred to the Works Committee with power to act.
