POLITICS

'F'HE Government of the country is now in new bauds, and it must be expected that the mistakes inherent in such a circumstance will be in evidence for some time to come. It must be remembered that the members of the Cabinet have been astonished by the turn of events. They never expected to be in such satisfactory positions as they now find themselves. Enthusiasm has thus been awakened. Prometheus has been unbound. The whole earth is their field to work their will in and to blaze the path for a new day for erring humanity to follow with bated breath and thankfid hearts. Therefore the public lias been regaled with some vigorous speeches by certain members of the Cabinet, who seem to have decided, before the Cabinet has formulated its policy, what is going to be done and what is not going to be done. This, in itself, will create complications for the Government, and the Prime Minister will find it expedient to put some restraint upon his more enthusiastic colleagues. Jn the meantime the publie should put down to the enthusiasm which is engendered by success much of the Ministerial wildtalk which is being indulged in at the moment. Ihe business of formulating a programme which is first within the bounds of practicability, and second, within the compass oi public approval, will soon temper the character of the public uttcrance.s of Cabinet Ministers. Men who have spent the greater portion of their lives in making promises which they never anticipated being called upon to fulfil, can be forgiven if they continue thenregular habits after they have been entrusted with the responsibilities of office. They can be expected to gather new’ experience from now on, and with them a degree of reticence as they proceed to deal with the tasks which confront them.
