ON TRENTHAM TRACKS

CUDDLE A FIT MARE GOOD TRIAL FOR. CUP Mith the approach of the Wellington meeting, horses with engagements were being sent along again at Trentham on Saturday morning after brie< r respites following the holiday racing, writes “Rangatira” in the Evening Pobt. The weather was dull but fine, and the trial grass, which has benefited from the recent rain and also partially from the automatic watering of the course proper, was in splondid order. The course itsvlf is as green a* in the spring, and the continual watering will keep it easy and fresh till after lhe meeting. Quite a number of good gallops w’ere recorded, but most of th-e horses set against the watch were members of T. K. George’s big team. J. W. Lowe worked his pair, Suuee and Red Sun. over tevvn furlongs early, but they were not timed, though they went well. It is possible that both will start in the Wellington Cup, and the Invercargill apprentice T. Wilson will be riding one oi’ them. So far Wilsou has no other eugagvmeats. Thu gallop on which all eyes were centred was a mile by Cuddle (S. Wil «-u:i; and Alight (N. Vaughan). Uuddle Wii> always ahead of Might, g'-ing easily while her mute was being kicked along. She lini.-ired a length in front after running the distance j.i Imin. 42 3 5.-ec., gumg the last seven furlongs in limn. 29sec. and thy lau-t half-mile in 5U JL-ssee. Cuddle looks every bit us well as she did before sine went north to Ellerslie. She is to start in the Cup, and will almvt-t for certain be. ridden again by £,. J. Ellis, even if Kinnoull, which is doubtful at present, should be :t runner. Were she io win she would establish many new records, among which would De the capturing of the New Zealand, Auckland and Wellington Cups in the one seacou. The onjy horse ever to wm all three races was Rapier, but though he performed the feat in the one year (1927; it was not in the same season. Alight, who will be better suited by the easier track at Trentham than he wa<> during the holiday meetings, will be S. Wilson’s mount in the Cup. Besides Alight, Wilson will be ou Princess Doreen, After Money (if not at Ashhurst,), Boomerang and Deficit or Cricket. Darecourt (R. Webster) was going well alongside Debhain (A. Leach; after running live furlongs in J min. 2 l-ssec., the last half-mile in 49 1-5 sec. Darecourt may go to Ashhurst, in which case T. Burgess would have the mount. Brabant (Wilson) comfortably beat Going Gay (R. Smith) by a couple of lengths over half a mile in 50 l-ssec. Brabant may be ridden by R. Reed at Trentham. After Money (Vaughan) left Princess Doreen (Wilson; to have a good two lengths in hand after running seven furlongs in Imin. 2S 3-ssec., the last mile, however, taking 51 2-ssec. Princess Doreen, though she has recovered from her bruise, has thickened up. as she usually does, during her recent ten days’ rest, and she should benefit a lot from the gallop. Fulojoy (Leach;, lighter than before the holidays but probably the better for it, beat Hine Ra (F. Thompson) by a length over half a mile in 48 3-ssec. llinv Ra had much the worse of the weightr. Deficit (Vaughan) and Cricket (Wilson) ran half a mile in 49 3-sscc. A inco (Vaughan) scampered over five furlongs in J min. 2 2-ssec., thp last half-mile in 49 4-ssec., and he did it pleasingly. Revival (G. Ridgway) easily accounted for Ayresleigh JWHson) over rix furlongs iu Imin. 17 3-ssec., the last half-mile in 52scc. Geitel (L. Faulkiner) ran an easy six furlongs in Imin. 22tsec. Sansfoy (R. Hawes) beat’Jewish Lad (P. Burgess), who was. stopping, over half a mile in sOsec. Nightlass (Hawes) was clear of Te Rangitumau (J. AlcCauley). whose rider lost an iron, after running a mile in Imin. 44sec., the last halfmile in 53sce. Shy and Chile went a mile together without being after time.
