WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB

THE SUMMER MEETING UST OF NOMINATIONS By “Kestrel.” Tith seventeen nominated fur the Wanganui Cup, compared with fourteen last year, there is a satisfactory feature about the list of nominations received for the summer meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club, to be held «»u Friday, January 31, and Saturday, February j. The aggregate of nominations. however, is slightly below last year’s figures, for 236 have been entered for the sixteen events to be decided, as compared with 2-53 last year. The Cup held includes last year’s winner, Aga Khan, and also the run-ner-up. Speed. Eminent, who was one of the unplaced division twelve months ago and has since proved successful in several minor cup races, has again bcerr entered for this race. The sew Zealand Derbv winner, l.oweuberg, is another entrant in whom much interest will be taken, and the Stratford Cup winner, Davistock, is also engage!. Other useful handicap performers in Refresher, Carfex, Hunting Lodge. Grand Jury, Gay Boy, and Pas.■don Fruit li«ve been nominated, and altogether the prospects for this event appear so bright that many will regret the absence of a trophy which would have justified the retention of the word •‘Cup’’ in the-title for the race. In the Flying Handicap some smart sprinters are engaged, and the distance hark events, including the £l5O Wanganui Hark Plate, have drawn good resjHinses from owners and trainers. It is to be regretted that the counter-attractions provided nearer hojne have been responsible for the absence of representatives from the Auckland province, but this may induce the club to explore some suggestions which may bring about the desired patronage from that quarter. A comparison of the entries as compared with last year’s figures may be perused with interest. Here it is:—
