CANADIAN PREFERENCES

CANBERRA, Jan. 1. Australia is keenly interested in th< trade treaty between Canada and th< United States. The Canadian trade bal ance with Australia is heavily in favoii: of Canada, but this country believe: there is a good prospect of improving trade as well as other relationships. Since 1931 the great Dominion am the Commonwealth have been working under a reciprocal trade agreement which has been of advantage to tin Dominion, and has also led to an in crease in Australia’s trade, particularly in dried fruits. Export of butter tc Canada have been very limited, but the concession made by the United State.in favour of Canadian butter may lead to an export trade from Canada in the flush of the season, which may make room for larger quantities of imported butter Tn the winter season. It is thought possible that Australia will capture part of this trade, but the close association of Canada with New Zealand, with which a reciprocal treaty has been made, suggests that New Zealand is likely to reap more advantage than Australia from the change in marketing conditions.
