NEED FOR AIR MAIL

CHRISTCHURCH REQUEST CONNECTION WITH AUCKLAND TIME COULD BE CUT IN HALF. ( Pt- Pr«« Aaaociat on. I CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 13. The establishment of an air mail be. twen the North and South Islands is being urged by the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, which this evening sent the rollowing telegram, signed by the president, Mr. F. W. Hobbs, to the Postmaster-General, the Hon. F. Jones. •‘The business community of Christchurch feel very strongly that now the new air service has been started an air mail should be part of it. If your department is not already making arrangements for this to bp done, this chamber would welcome the opportunity of meeting vou to urge the immediate institution of an air mail service. With the air mail service as proposed it would be possible to post a letter here at mid-day to catch an aeroplane leaving at .1.12 p.m., and arriving at Palmerston North at 3.37 p.m., connecting with the Main Trunk express arriving at Auckland early in the morning. The reply posted at Auckland the same evening would be carried by the railwav. The express would catch an aeroplane at Palmerston North at 8.30 a.m. the next, day to arrive at. Christchurch at 10.55 a.m. This would reduce the time taken by letters in transit to nne half. This expedition, it is argued, would be of special value in dealing with overseas mail via Vancouver.
