NIGHT FLYING

AUSTRALIAN AERODROMES. PROVISION OF FACILITIES. CANBERRA, IDec. 19. The three chief aerodromes in Australia—’those at Archerfield (Brisbane), Mascot (Sydney), and Essendon (Melbourne) —are being equipped with night landing facilities, including radio beacons or revolving beacons, at a cost of about £20,000, in preparation for inter-State air mail services. The cost of providing intermediate aerodromes with night flying facilities has yet to be estimated. Although the final details of the proposed services have not been drawn up, the Postal Department is preparing a schedule of postage rates and time-tables for the mail-carrying aeroplanes. It is considered unlikely that the complete services will be in operation by the end of the present financial year, but it is expected that by that time most of the initial work will be completed.
