OPIUM WORTH £2000
SEIZURE AT SYDNEY. FOUND IN UNCLAIMED CHEST. SYDNEY, Dec. 19. Customs officers to-day took possession of 369 tins of opium, valued at more than £2OOO, found on the steamer Tanda, which had arrived from Japan and China. When the Tanda arrived in Brisbane last Tuesday a camphor-wood chest was discovered among the luggage of Chinese passengers. Several other chests were claimed by owners, but no one claimed the camphor-wood chest. Customs officers sealed the chest and notified officers of the department in Sydney. As soon as the Tanda berthed to-day the boarding officers, under the direction of the boarding inspector, Mr. R. W. Wilson, broke the seals and opened the chest. Inside were two suitcases and a sugarbag, all crammed with tins of opium. The tins were in two sizes—--249 weighing tut) ounces and 120 weighing eight ounces. The opium will be destroyed.
