Drawing a load of 331 tons ihe London Midland and Scottish tunbine locomotive which has been introduced into regular service between Euston Station, London, and Liverpool, recently covered 152.7 miles of the journey, from Crewe to Willesden, in 131 minutes, start to stop, at an average speed of 69.8 m.p.h., while the final 77 miles from passing Rugby to stopping at Willesden were covered in under the hour. On favourable gradients descending the Chiltern Hills of 1 in 330, speed was sustained for some distance at 90 m.p.h., while other maxima of 88 and 85 m.p.h. were touched on .this spectacular run. A 15 miles’ ascent of the Chilterns at a gradient of 1 in 330 was made in 11 minutes, the minimum speed at the top being no less than 72 m.p.h.
