GOVERNMENT TO RESIGN
WILL ACT ON WEDNESDAY DECISION AT FULL MEETING OF CABINET STATEMENT ISSUED BY PRIME MINISTER (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, Nov. 30. A full meeting of Cabinet was held this morning to consider the political situation, and at its conclusion, just before 1 o’clock, the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. G. AV. Forbes) announced that he would hand in his resignation and the resignations of his colleagues to the Governor-General on Wednesday. Tire Prime Minister’s statement was as follows: “A meeting of Cabinet was held this morning to consider the constitutional position arising out of the General Election, and it was decided to tender to His Excellency the GovernorGeneral the Government’s resignation at the earliest possible moment. “Many of the Ministers only arrived in Wellington this morning, and there is a necessity to clear up routine work which has accumulated during their absence from their offices for the past month. A short time is needed for the purpose of dealing only with routine matters, all important decisions being left to our successors. lam anxious that the administration should be handed over at the earliest practicable moment, and I propose therefore to tender our resignations on Wednesday.” The Prime Minister-elect (Mr. M. J. Savage) will arrive in Wellington by the Limited Express at 9.41 a.m. on Monday, and it is anticipated that he will have an immediate interview with the Prime Minister. It is expected that there will be a large crowd at Thorndon Station on Monday morning to welcome New Zealand’s first Labour Prime Minister.
