A POPULAR FIGURE

MR. SAVAGE’S CAREER. The Prime Minister-elect is one of the most popular figures in the House of Representatives, and, apart altogether from politics, his accession to the office will be welcomed. During the time he has sat in Parliament Mr. Savage has won the respect and admiration of all sections, not only on count of his many outstanding personal qualifications, but also on account of the reasoned manner in which he discusses the problems that come before Parliament. A native of Victoria, Australia, Mr. Savage took an active part in the Australian Labour movement before corn ing to New Zealand in 1907. In 'hmovement in the Dominion he occupied many leading positions, n. eluding that of national secretary uf the New Zealand Labour Party and | Deputy Leader of the Parliamentary | Labour Party. He is still a member of the national executive. Publis life < outside Parliamentary duties has also claimed the attention of Mr. Savage, from 1918 to 1922 was a member of the Auckland City Council and the Auck land Hospital Board. He did not stand for re-election to either body, but in 1927 he was again induced to become associated with the work of the Hospital Board. He was re-ek-ute.l, and has remained a member ever since, serving on various committees uf that body. Elected to Parliament as member r Auckland West in 1919, Mr. Bavage has been re-elected at each succeeding con test, at the last of which, 1931. he scored a notable victory in a trimgular battle. In 1926 he visited Australia as one of the four New Zealand dele gates to the conference conducted by the British Empire Parliamentary Association, over which the Marques? ol Salisbury presided.
