A Hastings Press Association message announces the death of Mr. Walter Lambert Prime, aged 80, of Napier. Mr. W. Cecil Prime, representing the Employers’ Assessors on the Arbitration. Court, is a sou. The death has occurred at Napier of Mr. George Ashton Lathan, aged 71 years, states a Hastings Press Association telegram. Born in Victoria, the late Mr. Lathan migrated to New Zealand when a young man, engaging in Public Works contracts in the Taranaki district. In the year 190 U, with Messrs. Langlands, Kennedy and Nelson, he embarked on the reclamation of the Tewhare-o-Maraenui block at Napier, which area was later tc be known as Napier South. Widespread regret has been felt at the announcement that Mr. Gordon McBeth, after many years’ excellent service to the Wanganui Amateur Musical and Dramatic Society in the role of musical director, intends to retire from that position. An indication of how the society itself felt about it was given on Saturday night, the final night of “Tire Geisha,” by Mr. F. O. Bridgeman, the president. Mr. Bridgeman said that although he had read c-f Mr. Mcßeth’s intended retirement in the Press and on the programme, the society would not permit him to take that step. In any case, Mr. Bridge man stated, all great artists had to retire several times before they actually reached that end, and he quoted Danre Melba as an instance. This was Mr. Mcßeth’s first attempt at it and it would certainly not succeed as far as the society was concerned.
