THE TURF

SILK SOX AGAIN FEILDING CUP VICTORY SPIRAL WINS FLYING SPBING MEETING OPENS.

(By ’’Kestrel.”) Going into the lead before the field tad covered a furlong. Silk Sox. the r.*vner-trained Royal Divorce gelding vhich on Labour Day won the WaverDy Cup. ran home an easy winner of the Feilding Cup on Saturday, scoring }is moat impressive victory. Silk Sox was one of the three Taranaki representatives in the race, and another in Davistock filled second place, with one of the outsiders. Alby, in third berth. At no stage did Silk Sox give hL backers reason to doubt tho ultimate result, and over the final stages he.was Coing as smoothly as any of his opponents. The favourite. Gay Bov. struck trouble going out of the' straight and never threatened danger, in striking contrast to his successful efforts at Otaki and Levin. \ anestep. second i*i request, was fourth at the finish. Rust n ade an excellent showing and but for the fart that the Lysander mare had to be kept up to her task over the early stages to avoid getting into trouble, she might have been closer at the finish, when her condition gave ou‘. Passion Fruit was not disgraced. The day’s racing was conducted under dull weather conditions, rain setting in earlv in the day. but later this cleared. The track was in excellent order, though the going was a trifle 'lead. The attendance was good and thr ‘ gate” showed an increase. The tor-ftlisator handled £16,065. compared with £9537 on the opening dav la*t year, the increase thus being £528. The Koatanui breeder. Mr. G. M. furrie, had the satisfaction of seeing the Limond horse Spiral win the Flving Handicap after he had been in an almost hopeless position three furlongs from home. Backers nf Spiral, who was bracketed with Sex ere, were rather lucky for had an opening on the rails presented itself at the straight en t-anee the favourite would have founi it rather difficult to **atch the pacemaker. Whenuakura. The latter showed on his reappearance after a spell of eighteen months that he has retained his brilliance. Limulus went a good race, and the rest of the field, with th? exception of False Scent, also did well. , The juvenile race was won bv the Orausio colt Karl, who will be remembered as winning the second division of the two year-old parade at the Wang-i--nui spring meeting. His dam is th? ■.eight on—Los Vegas mare Sunnv Hours, and he carries the colour* of bis breeder. Mr. F. Ormond, for whom he is trained bv F. Davis at Woodville. Deficit, by Lack hum from Passbook, paid an exceptionally good dividend for second place, with the well-backed Notium third and the favourite Kindheart unplaced.

Petrarch returned a dividend not far tehort of a score when he won the Wailuna Hack Hurdles, in which Debut, little better than an even monev favourite. tried to lead all the wav bnt hooked the hurdle near the five-furlong post and thereafter did not travel at all kindly. Hunting Queen fell on th" Sat after jumping the first hurdle and brought down Manifesto, and at the last obstacle Kaola. when making a •or ward move, lost his rider. None of lhe horsemen suffered severe injurv. Another owner-trainer winner on the Ha' was the Diacquenod gelding Erebu?. bho ■♦ored an eight lengths’ victory in the Aorangi Trial Plate. At Waverley trebus beat al! lut the useful Chief Ranger, so his su?e<ss did not prove Altogether surprising. Enthens. the frvonrite. narrowly secured second place. mainly as a result of B. H. Morris outriding Version’s pilot. Ben Braggie. who was fourth, should not be long ruakirfg amend;'. Waipiro, trained at Fordell by D. returned a double figure divilend when she won the Kowhai Hack Handicap from a field of very useful barks, indicating that her win at Bulls last month was no mere flash in the tan. Corroboree impressed by coming borne very fast from the rear of the leld and securing second place ahead of ihp favourite. Da recourt. Dombey won the hack sprint, this being his first success since he has carried the colours of Mr. W. C. i?imson. for whom he is trained by W. C. Grind lay at Hawera. Incidentally. Dombey cave R. Red hi* first winning ride since ■is return from Australia. Courtega Inished second, narrowly heading off Lady Eka, and the favourite. Alcides, Was not disgraced in running fourth. , The concluding event, the Kiwitea Handicap, provided another win for the Xaranaki division, Glenvane leading from end to end to beat Big Dook. The labourite. Jubilee Song, was third, but Was four lengths behind the dividendJiayers. Petrarch’s Dividend.

* Debut was a short priced favourite tor the Waituna Hack Hurdles, but his backers lost money when Debut was beaten by the outsider of the field. I’atrarch, whose backers shared a good tin idend. ; The early order was Debut. Sanguine King. Hunting Queen, Manawatu and Manifesto, but Hunting Queen came io grief on the flat after clearing the Initial hurdle. Hunting Queen stumbled and fell, bringing down Manifesto. Aiguille ran up to second place, with Kaola bringing up the rear after getting chopped out at the fence in front bf the stauds, and along the back (Debut and Aiguille were three lengths clear of JSanguine King and Petrarch, with the others two lengths bark. {Debut got into the fence near the fivefurlo ng peg and that took a good deal but of him, wth the result that he was tinable to hold Petrarch’s finishing run. IA furlong from home Petrarch had /barge and he came on to win by two lengths from Debut, who nung on to second place by a neck from Manawatu. Aiguille was next, and feanguine King fifth.

Erebus by a Big Margin. Entheos car/ed nearly £6O more than teen Braggie and Erebus in the Aorangi [Trial Plate, and Erebus eventually won With the greatest ease. When the tapes went up Soho. Entheos. Ben Braggie. Erebus and Royal Pet k showed out in front of Merlyn, but after going half a furlong the last-. I

i named ran into the lead, showing the ' way to Helios. H*ebns, Entheos, Garter Red and Soho. Running across the j top Erebus went to the front, anil piloted Merlyn. Entheos, Version and * Garter Red. By the time they had I reached the straight Erebus was three lengths in front of Entheos, Version, Merlyn. Garter Red and Cyclopean. In the run to the judge Erebus came away and won by eight lengths. Entheos and Version had a great duel for second place, the favourite getting the verdict by half a head. Two lengths back was Ben Braggie, with Garter

Red and Soho next. Taranaki’s Cup Winner. Gay Boy, Vanestep and Silk fiox were backed in that order for the Feilding Cup, and Silk Sox duly reepated his Waverley Cup performances by leading all the way. Going past the stands, where there was a scramble for positions behind Silk Sox, Alby and Rust, the next were Rerohia. Vanestep, Aga Khan, Gay Boy. Passion Fruit, Tres Sec, and Davistock. Running down to the halfmile Silk Sox was followed by Rust, with Werohia, Alby, Vanestep, Passion Fruit and Davistock next in order and Gay Boy in the rear bunch. Into the straight Silk Sox was followed by Rust. Alby. Werohia, Davistock, Passion Fruit and Vanestep. In the run to the judge Silk Sox was holding his own and won by two lengths from Davistock. who cut down Alby over the last hundred yards. There was a gap of three lengths to Vanestep and Rust, with Passion Fruit and Werohia next to finish. Spiral Takes Sprint Event. The Spiral Severe bracket was the favourite combination for the Flying Handicap, with Whenuakura next in iequest, and backers proved right, for the dividends were paid by those named. Good Hunting moved out first from Royal Routine and Whenuakura, but the latter soon ran to the front ami opened up a gap, ahead of Royal Routine. Limulus, Good Hunting, Severe and Spiral. Whenuakura was soon three lengths clear, and Spiral, still last crossing the top, was kept on the rails. On the turn into the straight Whenuakura was two lengths in front of Royal Routine and Limulus, with Good Hunting next and Spiral coming through on the rails. Once, they straightened up Spiral maintained his run and caught Whenuakura, coming on to win by three-quarters of a length from Whenuakura, who was a length ahead of Limulus. Royal Routine was fourth and Good Hunting and Severe were next. Karl W'ins the Juvenile. The public went for Kindlieart and Notium in the Juvenile Stakes, with Karl, the eventual winner, third choice. Karl and Deficit were first to break the line, and when the field had settled down Karl. Notium. Imposture, Deficit, Laughing Lass and Kindheart was the order. There was no change into the straight, and in the run to the judge Karl, who was never really in danger, won by the best part of a length. Deficit finished oo 'nto second place, a i.eck in front of Notium. Laughing Lass was fourth and next in order were Kindheart, Larwood, Imposture and Mirth.

Waipiro Surprises Again. Darecourt was a firm favourite for lhe Kowhai Hack Handicap, with good money for Mustang and Confiscation, but the neglected Waipiro sprang a similar surprise to that registered ul Bulls and won decisively. King’s Lancer, Middle and Waipiro were disputing the lead going out of the straight, but Middle had run into the lead before they reached the seven furlongs, where Windward, King’s Lancer, Mustang, Treasure Hunt. Darecourt. Confiscation Waipiro and Eara v.ere running in that order behind the leader. At the half mile Middle and Windward were two lengths ahead of Mustang. Treasure Hunt, King’s Lancer, Confiscation and Darecourt, and the order was much the same crossing the top, Treasure Hunt following Middle into the straight, with Mustang. Windward, Darecourt, King’s Lancer, Eaia and Waipiro bunched behind them. Middle was done with at the distance and Waipiro came through to win by a length from the fast finishing Corroboree. with Darecourt a length further back, followed by Treasure Hunt. Mustang. Middle, Ingenuity and Aussie Ra. Another Mild Surprise. The Fitzroy Hack Handicap was a good betting race, with Alcides preferred to Quake and Lifeguard, but Dopibey and Courtega kept the dividends to the Taranaki division. Courtega and Collodion led out from Lifeguard, Ilias and Lady Eka, but at the half-mile Lady Eka, whr had run into the lead, was just ahead of Collodion, two lengths clear of Ilias, Courtega, Lifeguard, Dombey and Alcides Into the straight Lady Eka Collodion, Courtega. Lifeguard. Alcidc* and Dombey were ahead of Ilias and 'Quake, but once straightened up Dombey came through to win by a clear length. Courtega managed to head Lady Eka on the post, and three lengths back came Alcides, Lifeguar-1, Father's Choice and Ilias. Glenvane All the Way. Jubilee Song was better backed than Big Dook in the concluding event, but Glenvane went to the front and was never headed. Glenvane led out from Chief Marionette, Lapel, Big Dook, Midian and Jubilee Song. Running past the halfmile Gleuvaue was two lengths ahead of Lapel, with Midian next and Chief Marionette, Big Dook and Jubilee Song in that order Glenvane was followed into the straight by Lapel. Big Dook, Midian and Chief Marionette, and over the final stages the leader was still doing best, holding off Big Dook’s challenge to win by three-quarters of a length from Big book. Jubilee Song was third and Midian and Chief Marionette were next in that order. Details of results are:—
