NATIVE SCREEN ACTORS

ABORIGINES IN PICTURES. PRAISE FROM PRODUCER. SYDNEY, Nov. 11 A new and deep respect for the Australian aboriginal has been gained by Mr. Charles Chauvel, producor of talking pictures, as a result of his association with the aborigines of Palm and Hinchinbrook Islands, in the making of scenes in his new picture, “Uncivilised. ’ ’ Mr. Chauvel, who returned to Brisbane recently, said he had filmed between 309 and 400 scenes in which aborigines had taken part. He had been warned that it would be difficult to get them to move far from the gunyahs, because of their laziness and indolence, but when the natives discarded civilised clothing all the indolence disappeared, and they proved intelligent and untiring. No difficulty was experienced in obtaining highly realistic battle scenes.
