THE MANAWATU SEAT

’SSUE STILL IN THE BALANCE (Own Correspondent). BULLS, Nov. 28. 1 Split-voting reduced Mr. J. Linklater's 1931 majority over the Labour candidate, Mr. C. L. Hunter, to sixty, and with 200 absentee votes still to come in, the final issue is still uncertain. The sitting member’s position was undoubtedly jeopardised by the presence of Mr. J. K. Hornblow, who took 587 Linklater votps, while Mr. M. H. Oram (628) probably took a fair share of Nationalist supporters. The Labour candidate increased his score from 2286 in 1931 to 2769 in 1935, and here again it is said that Colonel S. J. E. Closey caused vote-splitting. Colonel Closey failed to gain anywhere near the votes counted on by Douglas Credit enthusiasts, though he polled well at Levin, Bulls, Awahuri, Tokomaru, Uongotea, (lien Oroua and several minor centres. Foxton was definitely against Closey. By means of loud speakers, Stills electors were kept fully informed of the progress of the election throughout the Dominion, and a fair crowd remained in the streets until after midnight, though chief interest evaporated with the declaration of the Manawatu poll, and the early and pronounced lead set up by the Labour Party. None of the Manawatu candidates were present in Bulls on Wednesday night, and proceedings passed off without disorder. Six hundred and fifty-nine votes were cast at Bulls on the Licensing questions on Wednesday, the votes being as follow: Continuance 477 State Control 41 Prohibition 141 Detailed results of the electoral voting for the Manawatu seat are as follow: «
