SCHOOL CRICKET

WIN FOR P.N. BOYS’ HIGH MATCH WITH COLLEGIATE The Wanganui Collegiate School and Palmerston North Boys’ High School played cricket yesterday, the match resulting in a win for Palmerston North by an innings and 23 runs. The wicket was very fast and the wicket fell in the last over. Wanganui Collegiate won the toss and batted on a wicket which may not have been as innocent as it looked. The opening batsmen were FullertonSmith and Nilsson, the latter being a left-hander. Hearsev bowled the first over from the College House end against a breeze which was uncertain enough to “do things”; and he bowled a maiden to Fullerton-Smith who appeared to be playing the flight of the ball. Stewart came on at the other and he, also, bowled a maiden to Nilsson, who was watching the ball. In the third over, Hearsey’s second, Ful-lerton-Smith opened his account with a three from an uppish stroke over the bowler’s head. A couple of balls later Nilsson chopped one down the gully for four. It was a good beginning for Wanganui and Fullerton-Smith gave early indication that he was going to go for the runs for he was putting plenty of power into his strokes. The fielding, however, was very keen, many full-blooded shots coining to a sudden halt within a few yards of the bat. Tho batsmen soon settled down to their work and runs came steadily, despite the changes in the bowling. When the total had been raised to 43 Nilsson was beaten by a good one from Hearsey The partnership had been a good one and when Orton went out to join Fullerton-Smith Wanganui were in line for a solid score. Orton was at the wickets for some time but he was eventually beaten by Hearsey and from his on the bowlers took charge, wickets falling rapidly. Fullerton Smith, who was batting* well and hitting with plenty of power, tried hard to stem the tide, but after Meuli had departed the innings closed with a rattle, the vistors being dismissed for 111. The total did not seem a difficult one for Palmerston High, who were expected to pass it without much trouble. The spectators were in for many thrills, however, and with only three wickets still in hand, there were 30 runs still to make to establish the first-innings lead. The tail wagged and the 111 was headed with the loss of only one more wicket, the heroes of the knock being Edwards, Bolton, Anderson, Cameron and Stewart. Palmerston’s innings opened disastrously, Gatley, Hearsey, Young, Fiet cher and Rabone all being back in the pavilion with only 21 runs on the board. Then the left-hander, Edwards, and Bolton made a useful stand against the sound attack by Burnard and Tidy, Edwards was watching the ball closely and exploiting a fine glance to leg and a fluent drive past mid-off. Rollon was meeting everything with the full face of the bat but after he had swung one to the fine leg boundary he made a yorker of a well-pitched-up swinger and was out leg before to Tidy, The total was 38 and the position a little better. The fact that he had lost Bolton did not worry Edwards, who promptly banged one to the fence past point. The next one he glanced through slips for another four. Runs were now coming at a good rate, Anderson wasting no time in getting to work. Several changes were made in the bowling and Currie was responsible for breaking the partnership when the total was 79. Edwards was driving well but attempting to slash one through the covers he misstimed it and Tidy accepted a difficult chance at point. Edwards had played a valuable innings and in his score were six fours. The home side were not out of the fire yet and the issue was still in the balance when Anderson’s innings carne to an end at 101. Anderson had contributed a dozen badly-needed runs and he was out for playing too soon to a slower ball from Burnard. The occasion did not seem to concern Stewart, who was next, for ht went for the bowling like a hungry tiger. Acting on the principle that it was not safe to land a ball inside the boundary pegs, he put all his weight behind the bat. He soon landed a ball in the shrubbery near the gate and, going for another big hit, ho skied one and it dropped safe after a fieldsman had got just within touching distance. The next shot put Palmerston ahead with two wickets still in hand. The batsmen continued merrily until the tea adjournment, when the score was tea adjournment.
