ATHLETICS

JOUR OF NEW ZEALAND VISIT BY AUSTRALIANS PERMISSION FOR FOUR SYDNEY, Nov. 26. The Amateur Athletic Association has granted permission to E. Winter, E. Hamilton, J, Sheaves, and L. Wall to tour New Zealand, pre-vided the tour docs not commence before the beginning of February. The above message is rather misleading, states the Evening Post. The Wellington Amateur Athletic Centre recently inquired through the Council G'f the N.Z.A.A.A. regarding the possibility of securing a visit from the New South Wales athletes Hampson, Sheaves, and Wall. The secretary oi the council, Mr. H. McCormick, communicated with the authorities in Australia on the matter, pointing out that no application for permission to conduct a lour had been made by the Wellington Centre —it was merely desired to know whether the men would be available. Apparently the request has been misconstrued in Australia. However, the Wellington Centre will now no doubt, made a formal application to the council for permission to invite Hampson, Sheaves, and Wall. Tire president of the centre, Mr. A. C. Kitto, when the cable was referred to him, stated that the date mentioned wou’.d be acceptable, provided suitable arrangements could be made with regard to the use of the Basin Reserve. The Auckland Centre, he said, had agreed to work in with Wellington, and it was possible that, if the tour eventuated, the visitors would make an appearance in Hawke’s Bay. ? Hampson is well known in New Zealand, having toured tho Dominion two s-easc-ns ago, when he won a fine reputation as a sprinter. Sheaves is the Australian cross-country and ten-mile champion, who ran very convincingly against the New Zealand team which visited New South Wales last winter. Wall, who is only 18, is an exceptionally promising jumper, having cleared 6ft. 2Ain. in the high .idnip. and 23ft. in the broad jump. Winter, a polevaulter, is the concern of the Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay Centre. It was desired that he tour the district during the Christmas period, and whether February will suit the plans of the centre is not known.
