MR. DICKIE’S WESTMERE MEETING
Sir, — Ln to-day’s issue of the “Chronicle” 1 notice a letter accusing me of being biased as chairman, of Mr. Dickie s meeting at Westmere. 1 realise as chairman of a political meeting one has gut to give a bit ui latitude, but of course if one gives it to any section outside the Duuglas U<Mi ‘’elusive” element he is bound to be biased, from their narrow-minded puin<, of view. How can your correspu-denL , truthfully say that 1 used the ‘‘big stick’’ on the opposition when i ; aLowed one of ti.eir number Lu make ' a long rambling statement giving the 1 pedigree u-f the directors of the Bank • of .England; and 1 only put a stop io * it alter strong objection from the ’ audience/ In fad of this, because a i gentleman whom they did nut agree | with made a. few remarks, exception , is taken to it even though the audi- ( euce expressed a wish to allow the , gentleman to finish; but one can t j expect much from those who belong : to a party that contains leading mem- j bers who talk of going out to smash | things, if they don’t get their own! way. As chairman I. was compelled to j take a stand when ibis class or elector . stood up to argue the point wiVh the , candidate. Your correspondent reminds - me uf the old Scotch lady watching her | son drilling with recruits. She said, ■ “They are all out of step except my; wee Jock.” With regard to the per-| sonal part of the letter, as your cc-rres- | pondent has brought himself down to j their level, I will let it pass. I have . never done anything I am ashamed of. , I have known in the past what it is to • have to work. If I have been a little mu-re successful than many others and it has created envy and jealousy on the part uf a few, it is beneath my contempt to comment further on the matter. I regret your correspondent is ashamed of his name.—l am, etc., J. IL FRANKLIN, Clmirma.n Dickie’s Westmere meeting. November 2(5, 1935.
