WORK FOR THE WEEK THE FLOWER GARDEN. Troceed with the planting of dahlias. Chrysanthemum planting can be continued Prepare ground well for dahlias and put central stake in position planting. Do not miss making a sowing matthiola bicornis, night-scented stock. Sowings of zinnias can be made. These should flower in autumn, which is the correct time for zinnias. Early planted chrysanthemums should be stopped at about eight inches high. Stake carnations and picotees before the flower stems become bent. Disbud carnations. Leave only the main bud, or in case of large flowers two may be left. Sow seed of asters and other annuals for late summer blooming. THE GREENHOUSE. Shading will be necessary. Ventilate so as to maintain a buoyant atmosphere. Keep the floors and benches damp, but do not allow fallen leaves or dead flowers to lie about; this latter causes disease. Fumigate once every ten days or so. Use kerosene emulsion of fir tree oil as a wash or spray for mealy bug. Attend to watering of plants according to their requirements. Drying out once or twice will spoil a batch of plants. THE VEGETABLE GARDEN. Plant tomatoes. Stake and delateral any that are needing it. A further sowing outdoors of tomatoes will give a late crop. Make a sowing of sweet com. Sow cucumbers, rock melons and water melons. Pumpkins and vegetable marrows can be sown. Prepare ground for kumeras. These can be planted from now on till the middle of December. Thin carrots, parsnips, beet as soon as they become large enough to handle. Make further sowings of lettuce, radish, turnips, beet, spinach. Sow celery and prepare the trenches. These latter can be used for spinach etc., till celery is ready. Make further sowings of peas. Stake any that are ready. THE FBUIT GARDEN. Spray apples and pears for codlin moth. The only effective spray is arsenate of lead. Spray peaches and plums with wettable surphur or lime-surphur for brown rot. Remove any shoots on the stocks of newly-grafted trees.
