ATROCIOUS CONDITIC'NS LONG-DISTANCE CYCLE RACE. TIMARU TO-CHUISTCHL'KCH. ( Per Press Association. 1 CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 23. One hundred and eleven riders started in the Timaru-to-Christchurch cycle race to-day. Riding conditions were atrocious. The men had to ride against a strong north-east gale for the whole journey and at least 75 per cent, of the starters did not complete the course. The only outside rider was T. Smith (handicap 40min.) of New Plymouth, who finished seventh. H. G. Watson (scratch) did not finish. L. G. Fleming made fastest time. The placed men were: D. Swanston (handicap 15min.), 6hrs. Omin. 6sec.. 1: B. G. Miles, Kaikoura (36min.), 6hr. 23 min. 7sec., 2; L. G. Fleming (13rnin.), shr. 58min. Bsec., 3.
